MEMS optical switches

IEEE Communications Magazine, 2001
Leveraging MEMS's inherent advantages such as the batch fabrication technique, small size, integrability, and scalability, MEMS is positioned to become the dominant technology in optical crossconnect switches. MEMS optical switches with complex movable 3D mechanical structures, micro-actuators, and micro-optics can be monolithically integrated on the ...

Control of a MEMS optical switch

2004 43rd IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC) (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37601), 2004
An analysis is performed of a MEMS optical switch to determine a dynamical model containing electrical, mechanical, and optical components. The model is compared to experimental results and shows a good match, aside from the damping term which is difficult to analyze.

MEMS optical switches and interconnects

Displays, 2015
Abstract This paper reviews several optical connecting devices that are based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) components. In this paper, we divide optical connecting devices into two categories. The first category includes MEMS-based optical switches developed for optical fiber communication, which perform optical switching, wavelength ...

Digital MEMS for optical switching

IEEE Communications Magazine, 2002
Over the last few years an amazing amount of interest has emerged for applications of micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) in telecommunications. Silicon-based optical MEMS have proven to be the technology of choice for low-cost scalable photonic applications because they allow mass manufacturing of highly accurate miniaturized parts, and use ...

MEMS for Optical Switching

Integrated Photonics Research, 1999
As the transmission capacity of WDM networks increases apace with rapidly growing demand, optical switching has attracted strong interest, due chiefly to the fact that its complexity is impervious to steadily rising per-channel bit rate, and its interfaces are inherently simple and inexpensive.

MEMS optical switches

LEOS 2001. 14th Annual Meeting of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (Cat. No.01CH37242), 2002
Summary form only given. Optical cross-connects is set to become the building blocks of future fiber networks (Toshiyoshi et al., 1996; Hill et al., 1993; Lin et al., 1998; Liu et al., 2000). This migration will enable routing and restoration at the photonic level, and eliminate costly electrical conversions.

Nonlinear Control of a MEMS Optical Switch

Proceedings of the 45th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2006
This paper presents the development of a dynamical model of a MEMS based optical switch. The model is verified using experimental results. An inherent weakness in the use of the model for control design is the unavailability of position information at all times due to the saturated output characteristics.
