MEMS technology in optical switching
2017 IEEE 14th International Scientific Conference on Informatics, 2017All-optical switching fabrics based on the Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology are now widely available on the market. This paper reviews working principles and architectures of MEMS-based optical switches from the past to the present day. During the last two decades, many approaches and actuating mechanisms emerged.

Optical MEMS for photonic switching
2005 IEEE LEOS Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings, 2005Optical communication system is moving from WDM pipe to photonic network, where optical switching is requested as key functionality. This presentation reviews the current trend of photonic network, and how MEMS optical switch is being deployed, with some explanation of our optical MEMS switch.

Modelling of MEMS optical switches
2009 International Conference on Emerging Trends in Electronic and Photonic Devices & Systems, 2009In this paper, a novel circular structure for MEMS switch is proposed. The MEMS switch is designed to have a movable mirror on a silicon substrate. The tilt of the movable mirror is done by the electrostatic actuator. The electrostatic actuator tilts the mirror to the desired position, so that the optical signals are switched to ON or OFF condition ...

MEMS Electrostatic Actuators for Optical Switching Applications
Optical Fiber Communication Conference and International Conference on Quantum Information, 2001Electrostatic actuators providing linear and angular deflection have been developed using deep reactive ion etching (DRIE). Optical switches with 0.5 dB loss at 1550 nm have been made showing switching times less than 5 ms.

Optical performance of 4x4 MEMS optical switches
SPIE Proceedings, 2005Optical switches made with Micro-electro-mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology bear advantages of both MEMS and traditional optics. It is of very importance to control position misalignments and angular misalignments, which have heavy effects on insertion loss of the MEMS optical switches.

The application and analysis of MEMS optical switches
SPIE Proceedings, 2005Next-generation wavelength routing optical networks requiring optical cross connects (OXC) in the network have the ability to direct optical signals from any input interface to suitable output interfaces by configuring their internal embedded optical switch matrices. Optical switches based on MEMS technology have the fundamental advantage of being able

MEMS for free-space optical switching
1999 IEEE LEOS Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings. LEOS'99. 12th Annual Meeting. IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society 1999 Annual Meeting (Cat. No.99CH37009), 2003Micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS), with its unique ability to integrate electrical, mechanical, and optical elements on a single chip, has demonstrated high potential for realizing optical components and systems in compact and low-cost form. Recently, this technology has been applied to wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) networks, and resulted

Optical MEMs in switching systems
LEOS 2001. 14th Annual Meeting of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (Cat. No.01CH37242), 2002MEMs for optical switching applications range from 1/spl times/2 small switches through to large scale 1k/spl times/1k solutions. These switches are evolving and finding acceptance in systems with different requirements: (1) 1/spl times/2 and 2/spl times/2 switches are needed for low loss (

An optical MEMS cross-bar switch
2016 International Conference on Numerical Simulation of Optoelectronic Devices (NUSOD), 2016We present preliminary findings regarding an optical cross-bar switch concept based on integrated silicon photonics waveguides and a MEMS device. Finite difference time domain simulations were performed were performed at a wavelength of 1550 nm to validate the initial design.

Modeling and simulating optical MEM switches
2000 IEEE/LEOS International Conference on Optical MEMS (Cat. No.00EX399), 2002This paper presents the modeling and simulation of a 2/spl times/2 optical MEM switch using our system-level, mixed-technology CAD tool, Chatoyant. Simulations include operation in both the "cross" and "bar" states and the mechanical tolerancing of the system.
