Cardiometabolic characterization in metabolic dysfunction–associated fatty liver disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
BACKGROUND: To better understand the patient's heterogeneity in fatty liver disease (FLD), metabolic dysfunction–associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was proposed by international experts as a new nomenclature for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease ...

Emerging role of low-frequency somatic mutations in cancer relapse: from early detection to precision oncology

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology
Somatic mutations with low variant allele frequencies offer a highly sensitive lens for detecting cancer relapse driven by diverse causes, including clonal evolution and therapy resistance.

The microbiome in human skin aging

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐related skin changes encompass the well‐known visible phenotypic alterations, together with microbiome dysbiosis and a series of molecular aging hallmarks. These hallmarks characterize not only a fully stablished aged phenotype but also the skin aging process itself.

Metabolic control through the PGC-1 family of transcription coactivators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Many complex biological programs are controlled at the level of gene transcription by DNA binding transcription factors. Recent studies have revealed a novel mode of regulation by coactivator proteins, best illustrated by the PGC-1 family of coactivators.

Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

Risk of Coronary Artery Disease Associated With Transitions in Metabolic Health in a Clinical Cohort of 69 272

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease
Background The effect of recent onset metabolic dysfunction on coronary artery disease (CAD) risk is poorly understood. We developed a large data set linking metabolic phenotypes and clinical outcomes to quantify CAD risks associated with adverse ...

Partial depletion of plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 decreases subcutaneous fat cell hypertrophy and liver cholesterol in high‐fat‐fed female mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Obesity raises blood levels of PAI‐1, a protein linked to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease in people with obesity. In female mice fed a high‐fat diet, partially lowering PAI‐1 led to smaller subcutaneous fat cells and lower liver cholesterol, without changing body weight or insulin sensitivity.

Metabolic Signatures of Lung Cancer in Biofluids: NMR-Based Metabonomics of Blood Plasma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In this work, the variations in the metabolic profile of blood plasma from lung cancer patients and healthy controls were investigated through NMR-based metabonomics, to assess the potential of this approach for lung cancer screening and diagnosis.

Fluoxetine disrupts cholesterol metabolism in endothelial cells via SREBP2 activation

open access: yesTranslational Psychiatry
Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) commonly prescribed for the treatment of depressive disorders. Recent clinical reports and studies in animal models have suggested that fluoxetine increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases,
