Trypanosoma cruzi: skin-penetration kinetics of vector-derived metacyclic trypomastigotes

International Journal for Parasitology, 2000
In order to investigate the natural route of infection of nude and normal BALB/c mice with Trypanosoma cruzi via the skin, a drop of vector faeces/urine containing metacyclic trypomastigotes was placed onto the puncture site of a bite from Triatoma infestans. The periods of exposure, i.e. until removal of flagellates from the skin, and the time elapsed

Trypanosoma cruzi: Origin of metacyclic trypomastigotes in the urine of the vector Triatoma infestans

Experimental Parasitology, 1988
Population density and percentage of the different stages of an established infection of Trypanosoma cruzi were determined for two parts of the excretory system and for the rectum of fifth instars of Triatoma infestans unfed and 4 hr after feeding. These data were also evaluated for feces and urine of the fed bugs.

The stage-specific 90-kilodalton surface antigen of metacyclic trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi

Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, 1990
The 90-kDa antigen, previously identified by the monoclonal antibody 1G7 to be a stage-specific surface protein of metacyclic trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi, has been further characterized in this study. Experiments of metabolic labeling with [35S]methionine, [2H]mannose and [3H]galactose revealed that the 90-kDa antigen is the main glycoprotein ...

Rapid isolation of metacyclic trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi from feces and urine of the vector

Acta Tropica, 1991
Metacyclic trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi from infected Triatoma infestans were isolated and purified by an improved procedure. By using feces and urine of bugs the duration and the number of steps for purification were greatly reduced, thereby minimizing any possible effects on the flagellates. After DEAE-Sephacel column chromatography, a buffer

Stage-specific surface antigens of metacyclic trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi identified by monoclonal antibodies

Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, 1986
Stage-specific Trypanosoma cruzi surface antigens were characterized by using monoclonal antibodies (MAb) which bind specifically to the metacyclic trypomastigotes derived from either the insect vector or acellular cultures. A protein with an apparent molecular weight of 90,000 was detected by the MAb 5E7 on the surface of cultured metacyclics of four ...

Trypanosoma cruzi: cloning and characterization of two genes whose expression is up-regulated in metacyclic trypomastigotes

Acta Tropica, 2004
The differentiation of epimastigotes into metacyclic trypomastigotes (metacyclogenesis) involves the transformation of a replicative non-infective form of Trypanosoma cruzi into a non-replicative infective stage. The study of genes with stage-specific expression may provide insight into the mechanisms involved in the regulation of gene expression in ...

Temperature acclimation of Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigote and metacyclic trypomastigote lipids

Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, 1997
This study examines the changes in cellular lipids that take place when Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes and metacyclic trypomastigotes are transferred from 28 to 37 degrees C. We found a rise in the sterol to phospholipid ratio, as well as in the triacylglycerol and steryl ester cellular content in T. cruzi epimastigotes.

Production of Monoclonal Antibodies to Metacyclic Trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi

Hybridoma, 1986
Monoclonal antibodies were produced and characterized to the metacyclic trypomastigotes stage of Trypanosoma cruzi. All the monoclonal antibodies (GR-12C/5; GR-P2B/5; GR-F2B/1; GR-J2C/6; GR-E6B/3; GR-A5B/5) also recognized antigens of epimastigotes of T. cruzi.

Comparison of infectivity of "Trypanosoma cruzi" blood stream trypomastigotes and metacyclic trypomastigotes from "Rhodnius prolixus"

Acta tropica, 1977
Four strains of Trypanosoma cruzi (Y, BG, M and Peru) retain their ability to infect Rhodnius prolixus and to produce virulent infections in mice for from 12 to 39 years. About 60 or more metacyclic trypomastigotes were consistently lethal to mice. The mean number of metacyclics per bug ranged from 1.2 to 17.3 x 10(3).

"Trypanosoma cruzi" : effect of pH on in vitro formation of metacyclic trypomastigotes

Acta tropica, 1983
The formation of metacyclic trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi in cultures initiated by freshly isolated bloodstream trypomastigotes was studied using three strains of parasites (Peru, CL, and Y) and two different media (L-15 and Grace's medium). Serum (10% newborn calf serum) and various sugars were required for in vitro development of metacyclic ...
