Archaeal Genes Code for GGDEF Domain Proteins With Diguanylate Cyclase Activity
A biofilm‐like mode of growth is hypothesized to be required for the emergence of cellular life. Occurrence of common biofilm gene products in current Bacteria and Archaea is an indication for their previous presence in the last universal common ancestor LUCA and perhaps even in the first universal common ancestor FUCA.

Systematic quantification and removal of host DNA contamination in 16S rRNA gene sequencing
Abstract 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing is a standard tool for microbial community analysis. Challenges can occur, particularly in low‐biomass samples, when host DNA triggers off‐target amplification. Low‐biomass microbiome studies are particularly vulnerable to contamination from host DNA, which can obscure microbial signals and bias ...

Benchmarking of Reference‐Based Tools for Strain‐Level Resolution of Plant Microbiome
ABSTRACT Strain‐level identification of each microbe is crucial for understanding its role in the host. Most of the existing tools have primarily been evaluated on human metagenomic datasets, whereas the plant microbiome exhibits greater diversity and complexity and thus poses a challenge in the strain‐level resolution of individual microbes.

ABSTRACT DNA library construction methods can affect the recovery of ancient DNA, thus influencing downstream analyses. While single‐stranded library preparation (ssLib) has been shown to outperform double‐stranded (dsLib) for highly degraded vertebrate host DNA, especially for samples older than 40,000 years, few studies have examined how library ...

Phage APU1, isolated from Bangladeshi agricultural soil, is a high‐quality, computationally predicted lytic Bacillus phage with a 153,847‐bp genome and no detected antimicrobial resistance or virulence factor genes. Comparative genomics identified APU1 as a genomically distinct member of a related Bacillus phage group.

Metagenome-assembled genomes from irradiated human dental plaque
ABSTRACT We provide 309 quality-controlled bacterial metagenome-assembled genomes recovered from supragingival plaque metagenomes. Samples were collected from head and neck cancer patients following radiotherapy, so the recovered genomes can be useful to investigate the effects of oral cavity irradiation on oral ...
