Methanococcus vulcanius sp. nov., a novel hyperthermophilic methanogen isolated from East Pacific Rise, and identification of Methanococcus sp. DSM 4213Tas Methanococcus fervens sp. nov. [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 1999
An autotrophic, hyperthermophilic methanogen (M7T) was isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal chimney sample collected on the East Pacific Rise at a depth of 2600 m. The coccoid-shaped cells are flagellated and exhibit a slight tumbling motility. The temperature range for growth at pH 6.5 was 49-89 degrees C, with optimum growth at 80 degrees C.

Genomes: Methanococcus jannaschii and the golden fleece [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 1996
The total genome sequence of the archaeon Methanococcus jannaschii completes the trilogy of genomes for the three domains of life-Archaea, Bacteria and Eucarya. It will have far-reaching consequences for evolutionary studies and for the way in which experimental biology is performed.

Dihydroorotase from Methanococcus jannaschii with substrate bound [PDF]

open access: yesStructural Dynamics
Dihydroorotases (DHOase) catalyze the reversible cyclization of N-carbamoyl-L-aspartate (CA) to L-dihydroorotate (DHO) in the third step of de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis.

Effects of CO2 and H2 limitations on Methanococcus maripaludis [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Hydrogenotrophic methanogens play a key role in anaerobic ecosystems by catalyzing the bioconversion of hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into methane (CH4) and water.

Complementation of an aglB Mutant of Methanococcus maripaludis with Heterologous Oligosaccharyltransferases. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
The oligosaccharyltransferase is the signature enzyme for N-linked glycosylation in all domains of life. In Archaea, this enzyme termed AglB, is responsible for transferring lipid carrier-linked glycans to select asparagine residues in a variety of ...

Biochemistry and genetics of autotrophy in Methanococcus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The project investigated fundamental aspects of carbon metabolism and genetics in the methane-producing archaeon Methanococcus maripaludis. The project yielded 23 peer-reviewed publications and five reviews from 1997-2007. PDFs of the peer-reviewed publications are included in the next section. Some papers of special interest are listed below.

Crystal structure of Methanococcus jannaschii dihydroorotase with substrate bound [PDF]

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section F, Volume 82, Issue 1, Page 23-31, January 2026.
We present the 1.87 Å resolution structure of M. jannaschii dihydroorotase complexed with the substrate carbamoyl aspartate at room temperature. Contrary to expectations, a flexible loop which is important in catalysis and closes upon substrate binding in order to stabilize the substrate and transition state is observed in both the loop‐out and loop‐in

Taxis Toward Hydrogen Gas by Methanococcus maripaludis [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2013
Knowledge of taxis (directed swimming) in the Archaea is currently expanding through identification of novel receptors, effectors, and proteins involved in signal transduction to the flagellar motor. Although the ability for biological cells to sense and swim toward hydrogen gas has been hypothesized for many years, this capacity has yet to be observed

Whole-cell modeling predicts alternative proteome allocation strategies in the archaeon Methanococcus maripaludis [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports
The archaeon Methanococcus maripaludis (M. maripaludis) is a model organism for studying archaeal physiology and energy conservation in the hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis pathway. M.

A tRNA Pseudogene in the ArchaeonMethanococcus jannaschii

open access: yesDNA Sequence, 2000
While searching the first completely sequenced genome of the archaeon Methanococcus jannaschii for a small RNA gene, we discovered a 5' truncated gene of a transfer RNA (tRNA(Ser-UCR)) at position 334,431-334,486; including the CCA-end that exactly matched the 3' terminal domain of the annotated M.
