Abstract figure legend Three weeks of overtraining in trained endurance athletes reduced exercise performance without impairing glucose tolerance. In skeletal muscle, overtraining was associated with increased expression of lipid metabolism‐related proteins, enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis and preserved insulin signalling, despite elevated oxidative ...

Osmotic stressors induce developmental and physiological changes in rice (Oryza sativa) seedlings, which are modulated by cell‐type‐specific gene expression and regulatory networks. We exposed plants to two levels of drought and salinity stress and measured the effects of these stressors on developing leaves by measuring physiological traits, ion ...

Thioredoxins and Methionine Sulfoxide Reductases in the Pathophysiology of Pneumococcal Meningitis [PDF]
Pneumococcal proteins involved in the resistance against oxidative stress are present in all strains and therefore are potential antigens that could be suitable for new therapies and/or vaccines. Their role in the pathogenesis of pneumococcal meningitis has not been addressed. We investigated the individual contributions of extracellular thioredoxin ...

One Hundred Years of Sulfido Ligand in the Molybdenum Cofactor: New Perspectives
The terminal sulfido ligand in mononuclear molybdoenzymes has been appreciated for almost 125 years, with the characterization of Schardinger's enzyme in cow's milk, now known to be xanthine oxidase, that was isolated in 1902 in Vienna, Austria. The ligand is found in molybdoenzymes identified across all kingdoms of life.

Sacrificial Methionine Residues Protect Active‐Site Histidines From Oxidation
Methionine residues near the active site of human ribonuclease 1 act as sacrificial antioxidants, protecting catalytic histidines from oxidation by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Chemoselective capping with an oxaziridine and total chemical synthesis with a sulfur‐free norleucine isostere each render the enzyme more susceptible to oxidative ...

Characterization and solution structure of mouse myristoylated methionine sulfoxide reductase A
Methionine sulfoxide reductase A is an essential enzyme in the antioxidant system which scavenges reactive oxygen species through cyclic oxidation and reduction of methionine and methionine sulfoxide.
