Genetic background modulates the phenotype of a mouse model of DYT1 dystonia. [PDF]
DYT1 dystonia is a debilitating neurological disease characterized by involuntary twisting movements. The disease is caused by an in-frame deletion (GAG, "ΔE") mutation in the TOR1A gene that encodes the torsinA protein.

Characterizing the microbiome of "sterile" organs in experimental mice and evidence of translocation of bacteria from the gut to other internal organs. [PDF]
Using culturomics and metagenomics, we demonstrate the existence of non‐pathogenic microbiota in the internal organs of healthy experimental mice, challenging the traditional dogma of organ sterility. Based on the analysis of 104 commercially sourced mice (C57BL/6J, BALB/c, ICR), the study reveals that over 20% of the analyzed mice harbored a high ...

SINGLE NUCLEOTIDE POLYMORPHISMS APPROACH FOR GENETIC BACKGROUND OF ICR MICE USING MASSARRAY [PDF]
Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are an effective method for determining the genetic background of ICR outbred mice in the National Laboratory Animal Center, Mahidol University. We screened 20 SNPs on all autosomes and X chromosome.

Variation in pattern of mystacial vibrissae in mice. A quantitative study of ICR stock and several inbred strains. [PDF]
We report on the variation in the pattern of mystacial vibrissae in ICR mice, of which one-half of the about 600 animals investigated showed one or more supernumerary whiskers (SWs). The SWs and their follicles--in all respects identical to the units of the standard pattern except for their smaller size--occurred at a restricted number of sites.

Cranial bone morphometric study among mouse strains
Background Little is known about the molecular mechanism which regulates how the whole cranium is shaped. Mouse models currently available for genetic research include several hundreds of unique inbred strains and genetically engineered mutants. By cross

On the importance of including both sexes in animal studies – insights from home‐cage monitoring
ABSTRACT A review of behavioural studies using home‐cage monitoring (HCM) systems revealed that over 61% of studies used only male subjects, with only 24% including both sexes, despite evidence of substantial behavioural differences between male and female animals. This bias could influence the outcomes of biomedical research.

A short‐term high‐carbohydrate diet enhances peripheral nerve regeneration more effectively than high‐protein or high‐fat diets by upregulating hemoglobin genes in Schwann cells. Increased hemoglobin promotes Schwann cell proliferation and migration, facilitating nerve repair.
