Gut microbiota facilitates dietary heme-induced epithelial hyperproliferation by opening the mucus barrier in colon [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Colorectal cancer risk is associated with diets high in red meat. Heme, the pigment of red meat, induces cytotoxicity of colonic contents and elicits epithelial damage and compensatory hyperproliferation, leading to hyperplasia.

Nicotine Reprograms Aging‐Related Metabolism and Protects Against Motor Decline in Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Long‐term oral nicotine intake protects against age‐related motor decline in mice without eliciting systemic toxicity. Integrated multi‐organ metabolomic profiling and longitudinal gut microbiota analyses reveal that nicotine induces coordinated remodeling of glycolipid and sphingolipid metabolism, enhances NAD⁺ bioavailability, and suppresses ceramide

Kidneys and microbiota

open access: yesUkrainian Journal of Nephrology and Dialysis, 2019
The review article analyzes the results of studies of the bi-directional relationship of the intestinal microbiota and kidneys, the so-called colorenal interactive axis of interaction.  The intestinal microbiota is considered as a kind of organ that influences the brain, cardiovascular and immune systems, as well as the kidneys of the "host".

The female urinary microbiota in relation to the reproductive tract microbiota [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
AbstractHuman urine is traditionally considered to be sterile, and whether the urine harbours distinct microbial communities has been a matter of debate. The potential link between female urine and reproductive tract microbial communities is currently not clear. Here we collected the urine samples from 147 Chinese women of reproductive age, and explored

Homeostasis of Gut Microbiota Protects against Susceptibility to Fungal Pneumonia

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Fungal pneumonia induces inflammation, shown by heightened IL‐6, IL‐1β, TNF‐α levels and a growth in Staphylococcus in the alveolar flora. The gut microbiota, acting through the gut‐lung axis via blood, impacts fungal pneumonia susceptibility by altering lung metabolism and inflammatory responses.

Food Additives And Microbiota

open access: yesNorthern Clinics of Istanbul, 2019
The use of food additives in food production is inevitable in this modern world. Although only a safe amount of food additives is approved, their safety has always been questioned. To our knowledge, the effects of food additives on microbiota have not been investigated in a detailed manner in the literature so far.

Sleep Deprivation Aggravates Periodontitis Through Trigeminal‐Periodontal Neuroimmune Pathway Mediated by the AChE‐ACh‐α7nAChR Axis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sleep deprivation (SD) exacerbates ligature‐induced periodontitis (LIP) through the trigeminal nerve‐periodontal neuroimmune pathway mediated by the acetylcholinesterase (AChE)‐acetylcholine (ACh)‐α7 nicotinic receptor (α7nAChR) axis. While electroacupuncture (EA) alleviates the condition of LIP combined with SD by activating the α7nAChR.

Gut mycobiome alterations in obesity in geographically different regions

open access: yesGut Microbes
The gut fungi play important roles in human health and are involved in energy metabolism. This study aimed to examine gut mycobiome composition in obese subjects in two geographically different regions in China and to identify specific gut fungi ...

Life Factors and Melanoma: From the Macroscopic State to the Molecular Mechanism

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Melanoma, an aggressive skin cancer, arises from dynamic interactions between genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. This review explores how age, gender, obesity, diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol, UV exposure, circadian rhythms, and medications influence melanoma risk and progression.
