PLK4 is a potential therapeutic target in nonmelanoma skin cancers: Evidence from molecular and in vivo studies

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
Exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation is the main etiologic driver of nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs), including basal cell (BCC) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC), which are the most prevalent types of cancers in the US. In this study, we demonstrate that the serine/threonine kinase Polo‐like kinase 4 (PLK4) is overexpressed in NMSCs ...

The Comet Assay: Tails of the (Un)expected. Use of the comet assay in pharmaceutical development.

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2015
In genotoxicity testing of pharmaceuticals the rodent alkaline comet assay is being increasingly used as a second in vivo assay in addition to the in vivo micronucleus assay to mitigate in vitro positive results as recommended by regulatory guidance.

Prolonged exposure to artificial light and carcinogenesis: A systematic review of oncostatic mechanisms associated with melatonin pathways

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
Exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN), particularly at blue wavelengths, disrupts circadian rhythms by suppressing melatonin, thereby increasing cancer susceptibility. This systematic review consolidates evidence linking prolonged ALAN exposure to an elevated risk of breast and prostate tumors.

Antigenotoxic effects of Mandevilla velutina (Gentianales, Apocynaceae) crude extract on cyclophosphamide-induced micronuclei in Swiss mice and urethane-induced somatic mutation and recombination in Drosophila melanogaster

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2008
A Mandevilla velutina crude extract was investigated using the mouse micronucleus test (MNT) and the Drosophila melanogaster somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) using standard (ST) and high bioactivation (HB) crosses.

Spaceborne and spaceborn: Physiological aspects of pregnancy and birth during interplanetary flight

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Crewed interplanetary return missions that are on the planning horizon will take years, more than enough time for initiation and completion of a pregnancy. Pregnancy is viewed as a sequence of processes – fertilization, blastocyst formation, implantation, gastrulation, placentation, organogenesis, gross morphogenesis, birth and neonatal ...

Genotoxicity and toxicity evaluations of ECF cellulose bleaching effluents using the Allium cepa L. Test

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
Toxicity and genotoxicity tests were performed on root cells of Allium cepa in order to evaluate wastewater quality following an ECF cellulose bleaching process.

In vitro genotoxicity testing using the micronucleus assay in cell lines, human lymphocytes and 3D human skin models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The toxicological relevance of the micronucleus (MN) test is well defined: it is a multi-target genotoxic endpoint, assessing not only clastogenic and aneugenic events but also some epigenetic effects, which is simple to score, accurate, applicable in ...

Ecotoxicological Evaluation of the Antimicrobial Butylparaben in Edaphic Organisms Using Multiple Biomarkers

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, Volume 41, Issue 3, Page 176-189, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Butylparaben (BuP) recurrently contaminates soils worldwide, mainly by incorporating sewage sludge into cultivated areas, using wastewater in irrigation, and leaching contaminated soils. However, there are few studies on the ecotoxicological effects of this paraben on edaphic organisms.

Trouble in the Tank: A Case Report of Fatal Scuticociliate Encephalitis in a Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 49, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract This case report presents a recent case of scuticociliatosis in a whitetip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus), housed at a zoo (Haus des Meeres Aqua Terra Zoo, Vienna, Austria). Clinical signs such as uncoordinated swimming and body tilt were observed prior to death.
