Mitochondrial function in cardiac hypertrophy

International Journal of Cardiology, 2013
Cardiac hypertrophic program is a chronic, complex process, and occurs in response to long-term increases of hemodynamic load related to a variety of pathophysiological conditions. Mitochondria, known as "the cellular power plants", occupy about one-third of cardiomyocyte volume and supply roughly 90% of the adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Mitochondrial Function in Myasthenia gravis

European Neurology, 1983
We determined the respiration rate, respiratory control and ADP/O ratios, with different substrates in mitochondria isolated from 2 patients with myasthenia gravis and compared them with normal human muscle. In all cases studied, a severe alteration of the respiratory control with variable derangement of oxidative phosphorylation was found.

Cardiomyopathy and abnormal mitochondrial function

Cardiovascular Research, 1994
The diagnosis of cardiomyopathy is mainly based on clinical and morphological criteria. While metabolic, viral, chemical, genetic, and immunological factors are often proposed as causes of cardiomyopathy, little is known about the role of the respiratory chain and other biochemical mitochondrial defects in this group of diseases.

Mitochondrial function during ischemic preconditioning

Surgery, 2002
Background. Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) protects the myocardium from ischemia reperfusion injury. The effect of IPC on the mitochondria is not well known. However, one of the mechanisms postulated in IPC (the opening of the mitochondrial K(ATP) channels) is likely to result in changes in mitochondrial function.

Mitochondrial DNA structure and function

2002
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) structures and its functions. The human mtDNA is representative of mammalian mitochondrial genomes. Comparison of the nucleotide sequences of mammal mtDNA revealed some degree of conservation in the promoter regions as well as in three other regions (termed “Conserved Sequence Blocks,”

Pharmacologic effects on mitochondrial function

Developmental Disabilities Research Reviews, 2010
AbstractThe vast majority of energy necessary for cellular function is produced in mitochondria. Free‐radical production and apoptosis are other critical mitochondrial functions. The complex structure, electrochemical properties of the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM), and genetic control from both mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear DNA (nDNA) are
