Inhibition of the Mitochondrial Cyclosporin A-sensitive Permeability Transition Pore by the Arginine Reagent Phenylglyoxal

open access: yes, 1997
The mitochondrial permeability transition pore, a cyclosporin A-sensitive channel, is controlled by the transmembrane electric potential difference across the inner membrane.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Structure and physiological role of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) is Ca2+ dependent channel localised in the inner mitochondrial membrane. One of its defining characteristics is inhibition by nanomolar concentrations of immunosuppressant cyclosporine A (CsA).

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Ionomycin suppresses cancer cell growth by disrupting mitochondrial transcription

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In this study, we identify a new function for the selective Ca2+ ionophore, ionomycin, as an inhibitor of mitochondrial transcription. Both total and nascent RNA analyses revealed that ionomycin treatment reduces the transcription of mitochondrial genes.

Mitochondrial Toxicity of Drugs

open access: yesCHIMIA, 2006
Mitochondria are important targets of drug toxicity. A variety of drugs has been shown to affect the electron transport chain, coupling of oxidative phosphorylation, ?-oxidation or other mitochondrial functions.

The mitochondrial permeability transition pore activates the mitochondrial unfolded protein response and promotes aging

open access: yeseLife, 2021
Mitochondrial activity determines aging rate and the onset of chronic diseases. The mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) is a pathological pore in the inner mitochondrial membrane thought to be composed of the F-ATP synthase (complex V ...

Perspectives on the mitochondrial permeability transition

open access: yes, 1998
The permeability transition, a sudden permeability increase of the inner mitochondrial membrane that is greatly favored by Ca2+ accumulation, has puzzled mitochondrial scientists for more than 40 years.

Selective elimination of quiescent cancer cells by dequalinium chloride via ROS‐mediated ferroptosis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Dequalinium chloride (DQ) selectively eliminates quiescent cancer cells (QCCs) by amplifying mitochondrial ROS. QCCs exhibit elevated basal ROS and limited redox‐buffering capacity, making them vulnerable to further ROS increases. DQ‐induced ROS exceeds the tolerance threshold, triggering lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis, whereas proliferating cells ...

An Integrated Oxygen‐Supplying Device and Predictive Multiphysics Model for Extended Ambient Transport of Insulin‐Producing Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cell therapies typically rely on cold‐chain logistics and cryopreservation, limiting access and compromising cell quality. Here, a dual‐chamber device separates an oxygen‐supplying chamber from a hyaluronic acid cargo chamber, sustaining oxygen delivery for over 70 h and enabling ambient‐temperature shipment.
