Reversible and irreversible mitochondrial swelling in vitro.

open access: yesBiophysical Chemistry, 2021
Mitochondrial activity as regards ATP production strongly depends on mitochondrial swelling (MS) mode. Therefore, this work analyzes reversible and irreversible MS using a detailed biophysical model. The reported model includes mechanical properties of the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM).

Mitochondrial Swelling Induced by Glutathione [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Biophysical and Biochemical Cytology, 1959
Reduced glutathione, in concentrations approximating those occurring in intact rat liver, causes swelling of rat liver mitochondria in vitro which is different in kinetics and extent from that yielded by L-thyroxine. The effect is also given by cysteine, which is more active, and reduced coenzyme A, but not by L-ascorbate, cystine, or oxidized ...

Exercise‐induced heart mitochondrial cholesterol depletion influences the inhibition of mitochondrial swelling

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, 2013
The meaning of cholesterol pool reduction in heart mitochondria after exercise is still unknown phenomenon. Therefore, the aim of the study was to establish whether the decreased cholesterol content in heart mitochondria caused by prolonged swimming may ...

Mathematical Analysis of a PDE-ODE Coupled Model of Mitochondrial Swelling with Degenerate Calcium Ion Diffusion

SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, 2020
The model that we investigate here is motivated by the mitochondrial swelling process controlled by calcium ions, the spatial dynamics of which is described by degenerate diffusion.

Inhibition of brain mitochondrial swelling by idebenone

Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, 1989
The effects of idebenone on the swelling of rat brain mitochondria were studied. When FeCl3 was added to a mitochondrial suspension, a pronounced mitochondrial swelling occurred accompanied by the production of lipid peroxide; the two phenomena were closely correlated (r = 0.96, p less than 0.01).

Differentiation of types of mitochondrial swelling

Experimental and Molecular Pathology, 1962
Abstract Transformations of rat liver mitochondria were studied under metabolizing and nonmetabolizing conditions. The transformations were followed simultaneously by three methods: (1) Measurement of absorbancy changes at 520 mμ; (2) mitocrit (packed volume) measurements; and (3) evaluation of morphological alterations by phase contrast microscopy.

Taurine prevents mitochondrial membrane permeabilization and swelling upon interaction with manganese: Implication in the treatment of cirrhosis‐associated central nervous system complications

Journal of biochemical and molecular toxicology, 2018
Brain tissue manganese (Mn) accumulation is a cirrhosis‐associated complication. Cellular mitochondria are among the potential targets for Mn‐induced cytotoxicity.

Reversible and irreversible mitochondrial swelling: Effects of variable mitochondrial activity

Biosystems, 2021
An extended biophysical model was obtained by upgrading the previously reported one (Khmelinskii and Makarov, 2021). The upgraded model accommodates variations of solute transport rates through the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) within the mitochondrial population, described by a Gaussian distribution.

Osmotic reversal of mitochondrial swelling

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 1961
Previously published data1,11 have been found consistent with the hypothesis that mitochodrial swelling is primarily the result of the penetration of the suspending solute. A relaxation of a contractile mechanism or the hydration of an internal gel-like material do not seem to be significant in this process.
