MITOCHONDRIAL SWELLING AT ACID pH

Canadian Journal of Biochemistry, 1966
The effect of variations of pH on swelling of rat liver mitochondria was studied. It was found that mitochondria swell at acid pH (5.0–6.0) when they are incubated in isotonic solution of potassium chloride. The extent of swelling increased with decreasing tonicity of the medium.

Mitochondrial swelling and electron transport I. Swelling supported by ferricyanide

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 1960
Abstract The swelling of rat-liver mitochondria in presence of phosphate is inhibited by cyanide but restored by further addition of ferricyanide. The effects on swelling of inhibitors of electron transport (amytal, antimycin A) and of compounds which prevent phosphorylation (2,4-dinitrophenol, oligomycin) have been studied in presence and absence of

Mitochondrial ultrastructure and volume during swelling

Journal of Ultrastructure Research, 1977
The ultrastructure of hepatic mitochondria was studied during energy-linked swelling and compared with overall mitochondrial volume and optical density measurements. Total mitochondrial volume change during swelling was determined directly by resistive particle counting using a pulse height analyzer in conjunction with a Coulter counter Model ZB.

Dependence of Mitochondrial Swelling on Oxidizable Substrates

Nature, 1958
THAT the swelling of isolated mitochondria induced by various agents fails to occur under anaerobic conditions1,2 suggested to us that swelling may be dependent on respiration. The probability of this is increased by the finding3,4 that malonate prevents the swelling induced by succinate of mitochondria suspended in mannitol or sucrose solutions.

Experiments on mitochondrial swelling in vivo

Experientia, 1967

Administered Puromycin and Mitochondrial Swelling

Endocrinology, 1965
Puromycin administered in amounts reported by others to lower the metabolic rate of thyrotoxic rats increases the swelling of isolated liver mitochondria. This effect has been observed in 9 experiments and is not associated with changes in P/O or respiratory control ratio.

Relationship of Mitochondrial Swelling to Thyroxine-Stimulated Mitochondrial Protein Synthesis

Endocrinology, 1970
The effects of thyroid hormones and other swelling agents upon mitochondrial volume and upon uptake and incorporation of leucine by normal rat liver mitochondria have been studied in vitro in the medium usually employed for protein synthesis. The lowest concentration of T4 (10 μM) which consistently caused swelling also stimulated amino acid ...

Mitochondrial swelling and uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation by lysosomes

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Bioenergetics, 1967
Abstract Lysosomes catalyze a rapid disruption of mitochondrial structure and function in which oxidative phosphorylation is uncoupled and mitochondrial ATPase is activated. There is a concomitant irreversible high amplitude swelling of mitochondria which is independent of substrate availability.

Induction of mitochondrial swelling by the fungicide captan

Biochemical Pharmacology, 1971
Abstract The fungicide captan induces large-amplitude swelling in rat liver mitochondria. In the absence of an energy source, initial swelling, but not later swelling, can be inhibited by 2,4-dinitrophenol and KCN, suggesting two phases in the process—the first energy-linked, the second passive. Sucrose inhibits both phases of swelling.

Mitochondrial swelling induced by unconjugated bilirubin in vitro

Experientia, 1973
