Exploration and Improvement of Acid Hydrolysis Conditions for Inulin-Type Fructans Monosaccharide Composition Analysis: Monosaccharide Recovery and By-Product Identification

open access: yesFoods
Acid hydrolysis serves as the primary method for determining the monosaccharide composition of polysaccharides. However, inappropriate acid hydrolysis conditions may catalyze the breakdown of monosaccharides such as fructans (Fru), generating non-sugar ...

A simple, mass balance model of carbon flow in a controlled ecological life support system [PDF]

open access: yes
Internal cycling of chemical elements is a fundamental aspect of a Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS). Mathematical models are useful tools for evaluating fluxes and reservoirs of elements associated with potential CELSS configurations.

Intestinal Barrier Glycosylation for Gut Physiology and Pathology

open access: yesBarrier Immunity, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The intestinal barrier is a selective structure that safeguards the body from external threats while permitting nutrient absorption and immune surveillance. It consists of the outer mucus layer, the intermediate layer of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), and the inner layer of immune cells. The proteins in the mucus layer and within IECs are

Green Synthesis of Hantzsch Dihydropyridines from Biorenewable Furans Derived from Lignocellulosic Biomass

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, EarlyView.
A sustainable methodology is developed for the synthesis of dihydropyridines from furanic aldehydes derived from lignocellulosic biomass, using p‐sulfonic calix[4]arene as a catalyst and microwave irradiation heating. The reaction occurs in the absence of solvents, with short reaction time and satisfactory yields.

Membrane glycomics reveal heterogeneity and quantitative distribution of cell surface sialylation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Given that unnatural sugar expression is metabolically achieved, the kinetics and disposition of incorporation can lend insight into the temporal and localization preferences of sialylation across the cell surface.

Toward the Synthesis of 3,3‐Difluoro Deaminated Sialic Acid (C3DFKDN)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, EarlyView.
The synthesis of protected C3‐difluoro KDN (C3DFKDN), an unnatural derivative of the sialic acid member, KDN, and key building block for KDN‐based chemical probes, is reported. Its 12‐step synthetic route starts from commercially available methyl d‐mannopyranoside and key steps include a Reformatsky reaction with ethyl bromodifluoroacetate, alkylation ...
