Matrigel inhibits elongation and drives endoderm differentiation in aggregates of mouse embryonic stem cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Stem cell‐based embryo models (SCBEMs) are valuable to study early developmental milestones. Matrigel, a basement membrane matrix, is a critical substrate used in various SCBEM protocols, but its role in driving stem cell lineage commitment is not clearly defined.

Longitudinal growth of the Saccharina kelp embryo depends on actin filaments that control the formation of a corset-like structure composed of alginate

open access: yesScientific Reports
The initiation of embryogenesis in the kelp Saccharina latissima is accompanied by significant anisotropy in cell shape. Using monoclonal antibodies, we show that this anisotropy coincides with a spatio-temporal pattern of accumulation of alginates in ...

Neuroepithelial organoid patterning is mediated by a neighborhood watch mechanism

open access: yesCell Reports, 2023
Summary: During epithelial tissue patterning, morphogens operate across multiple length scales to instruct cell identities. However, how cell fate changes are coordinated over these scales to establish spatial organization remains poorly understood. Here,

The morphogenesis of feathers [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 2002
Feathers are highly ordered, hierarchical branched structures that confer birds with the ability of flight. Discoveries of fossilized dinosaurs in China bearing 'feather-like' structures have prompted interest in the origin and evolution of feathers. However, there is uncertainty about whether the irregularly branched integumentary fibres on dinosaurs ...

Matrix: a complex amalgam of structures and functions in tumor microenvironment

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The matrix is a dynamic, intricate three‐dimensional mesh of biomolecules with both structural and functional properties. This review deals with the complexity of this ‘molecular amalgam’ in the tumor microenvironment and highlights its importance in the maintenance and evolution of tumors by describing certain matrix biomolecules, such as ...

Wood identification of Japanese Shinto deity statues in Matsunoo-taisha Shrine in Kyoto by synchrotron X-ray microtomography and conventional microscopy methods

open access: yesJournal of Wood Science, 2019
Research on the wood species of Japanese Buddhist statues has an over 60 years’ history and recently many Buddhist “Ichiboku” statues carved out of a single bole made from the Nara to Heian periods were scientifically revealed to be made of Torreya ...

An updated classification of hair follicle morphogenesis

open access: yesExperimental Dermatology, 2019
Hair follicle (HF) formation in developing embryonic skin requires stepwise signalling between the epithelial epidermis and mesenchymal dermis, and their specialized derivatives, the placode/germ/peg and dermal condensate/papilla, respectively ...

The control of branching morphogenesis [PDF]

open access: yesOpen Biology, 2013
Many organs of higher organisms are heavily branched structures and arise by an apparently similar process of branching morphogenesis. Yet the regulatory components and local interactions that have been identified differ greatly in these organs. It is an open question whether the regulatory processes work according to a common principle and how far ...

Actin dynamics controlled by IqgC, a RasGAP at the crossroads between the IQGAP and fungal GAP1 families

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
IqgC is a RasGAP from Dictyostelium discoideum. IqgC binds RasG via its RasGAP domain and deactivates it on macroendocytic cups, thereby suppressing the uptake of fluid and particles. IqgC has a positive effect on cell‐substratum adhesion, and its RGCt domain is required for recruitment to ventral foci.

Regional specialization and fate specification of bone stromal cells in skeletal development

open access: yesCell Reports, 2021
Summary: Bone stroma contributes to the regulation of osteogenesis and hematopoiesis but also to fracture healing and disease processes. Mesenchymal stromal cells from bone (BMSCs) represent a heterogenous mixture of different subpopulations with ...
