Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Multi-scale Modeling of Rechargeable Ion Batteries

open access: yes, 2020
Rechargeable Li-ion batteries (LIBs) play a crucial role in fulfilling our energy needs during our everyday residential and commercial activities. Thus, there is a growing demand for next-gen LIBs’ with more robust, reliable and long-term operation.

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

Structure‐forward targeting of claudins with synthetic binders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Claudins form the paracellular barriers between epithelial and endothelial tissues at tight junctions and are targets for molecular binders with the goal of modulating barrier permeability. Claudin‐binding molecules are relevant in drug delivery or in altering claudin interactions with disease‐causing proteins.

Multi-Scale Modeling for Ionic Liquid Enabled Separation Systems

open access: yes, 2022
Humanity's energy consumption is enormous, accompanied by high costs and CO2 emissions. Separation processes account for 45-55% of industrial energy consumption in the United States.

Engineering peptides into antibodies—opportunities and strategies for therapeutic innovation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Peptides and antibodies occupy complementary therapeutic niches. Peptides recognize difficult targets in a compact format, while antibodies add specificity, long half‐life, and effector functions. This review examines strategies that merge both modalities—peptide grafting into loops, terminal and Fc fusions, and bioconjugation—highlighting how ...

Emergency management and urban resilience under seismic risks. Part II: validation and sensitivity analysis for buildings seismic damage evaluation

open access: yesEmergency Management Science and Technology
The present paper follows the first part that aimed to develop a theoretical methodology able to derive building global damage from its structural components' damages: beams and columns in the case of RC frame buildings.

Dissolution of Cavities and Porous Media: a Multi-Scale View [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Dissolution of underground cavities or porous media involves many different scales that must be taken into account in modeling attempts. This paper presents a review of some of these problems.

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Multi-scale computational modeling of developmental biology [PDF]

open access: yesBioinformatics, 2012
Abstract Motivation: Normal development of multicellular organisms is regulated by a highly complex process in which a set of precursor cells proliferate, differentiate and move, forming over time a functioning tissue. To handle their complexity, developmental systems can be studied over distinct scales.
