Enteric Nervous System Damage by Food Contaminants: A Pathway to Neurodegeneration?

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 25, Issue 3, May 2026.
ABSTRACT The enteric nervous system (ENS), a key component of the gut–brain axis, has emerged as a critical player in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). It is the first neural system exposed to food contaminants (FCs)—a diverse group of ubiquitous toxic compounds fortuitously present in food derived from production, processing, storage, or ...

Multi‐Omics Reveals Dysregulated Neurotransmitter Systems in Aging and CNS Disorders

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 5, May 2026.
Integrating large‐scale human snRNA‐seq, spatial transcriptomics, and cerebral organoid datasets reveals cell‐type‐specific neurotransmitter‐system remodeling across aging and CNS disorders. Shared and disease‐specific NTS alterations highlight candidate mechanisms, sex differences, and exploratory discriminatory signals that may guide mechanistic ...

Pharmacological and Mechanistic Interventions for Cognitive Impairment Associated With Schizophrenia: A Review of Registered Clinical Trials

open access: yesActa Psychiatrica Scandinavica, Volume 153, Issue 5, Page 402-431, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Schizophrenia is characterized by positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms. Current pharmacological treatments often fail to address cognitive deficits. In this review of clinical trials, we aim to identify studies that explore neurobiological (non‐psychological) strategies to address Cognitive Impairment Associated with ...

Acetylcholine From Solitary Chemosensory Cell, Not Neuron, Regulates Basal Cell Fate Driving Eosinophilic Chronic Rhinosinusitis With Nasal Polyps

open access: yesAllergy, Volume 81, Issue 5, Page 1617-1634, May 2026.
This study identifies that Ach levels are elevated in eCRSwNP and primarily released from SCCs rather than neurons. Ach induces epithelial remodeling in eCRSwNP by binding to M1R/M3R and activating YAP signaling in basal cells, driving basal cell hyperplasia and abnormal differentiation. Blocking M1R/M3R with TB inhibits eCRSwNP progression.

Patterns and Clinical Efficacy of Biologics Switching in Patients With Severe Asthma: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesAllergy, Volume 81, Issue 5, Page 1548-1570, May 2026.
This meta‐analysis included 2292 patients with severe asthma who underwent biologic switching across 23 countries/regions. The most prevalent switching pattern was from mepolizumab to benralizumab, with suboptimal asthma control being the primary reason.

Protectin D1 and maresin 1 attenuate airway hyperreactivity induced by IL‐13 in human isolated small bronchi

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 9, Page 2049-2060, May 2026.
Background and Purpose Interleukin (IL)‐13 is implicated in airway hyperreactivity (AHR), a key feature of asthma. We explored the potential anti‐AHR activity of selected specialised pro‐resolving mediators (SPMs) in IL‐13‐induced AHR models, using human bronchial smooth muscle cells (BSMCs) and human isolated bronchi.
