Developmental Expression of the Myelin Proteolipid Protein Gene
1990Myelinogenesis is a highly regulated developmental process, which is necessary for normal CNS development. Oligodendrocyte differentiation and its subsequent elaboration of a myelin membrane that ensheaths certain axons occur within a very precise time frame — for rodents, from 15 to 25 days of age.

Myelin proteolipid protein (PLP) is a prime candidate autoantigen for multiple sclerosis. In order to define potential immunodominant epitopes, T cell lines (TCL) from the peripheral blood of HLA-DR 15(2) MS patients were established which responded to the intact molecule of PLP.

AbstractContrary to widely held beliefs, the gene encoding proteolipid protein (PLP), the major structural protein of central nervous system myelin, is ecpressed in Schwann cells and their tumors. Proteolipid mRNA was identified in human acoustic neuromas and in rat and rabbit sciatic nerves using a human PLP cDNA as probe.
