Background. Revascularization of infarcted myocardium results in release of inflammatory cytokines mediating myocardial reperfusion injury and heart failure. Blockage of inflammatory pathways dampens myocardial injury and reduces infarct size.

Myocardial protective effect by ulinastatin via an anti-inflammatory response after regional ischemia/reperfusion injury in an in vivo rat heart model [PDF]
BackgroundUlinastatin has anti-inflammatory properties and protects organs from ischemia/reperfusion-induced injury. The aim of this study was to investigate whether ulinastatin provides a protective effect on a regional myocardial ischemia/reperfusion ...

Down’s syndrome and myocardial reperfusion injury
Down syndrome is known to be an independent risk factor for mortality after surgical repair of congenital heart anomalies. It is also associated with neurodegenerative disease and accelerated aging. The mechanism of the latter features has been attributed to abnormal handling of oxygen-free radicals as well as mitochondrial dysfunction.

Phosphomimetic modulation of eNOS improves myocardial reperfusion and mimics cardiac postconditioning in mice. [PDF]
Myocardial infarction resulting from ischemia-reperfusion injury can be reduced by cardiac postconditioning, in which blood flow is restored intermittently prior to full reperfusion.

On Circadian Variation of Myocardial Reperfusion Injury [PDF]
See related article, pages 105–110 In 1729, Jean Jacques d'Ortous de Marian, a French scientist, made the fascinating observation that plants that unfolded their leaves when exposed to sunlight (presumably to increase photosynthesis, a process that had not yet been discovered) continued to rhythmically unfold their leaves in the morning and fold them ...

Background Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is an important factor limiting the success of cardiac reperfusion therapy. Curcumin has a significant cardioprotective effect against IRI, can inhibit ventricular remodeling induced by pressure load or MI ...

Myocardial reperfusion injury: a new view [PDF]
Acute coronary occlusion resulting in myocardial infarction is the main mechanism by which coronary artery disease reduces survival and leads to deterioration of the quality of life, and the extent of cell death is the main determinant of survival in patients with acute myocardial infarction.
