Insights into the evolution of sialic acid catabolism among bacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Background Sialic acids comprise a family of nine-carbon amino sugars that are prevalent in mucus rich environments. Sialic acids from the human host are used by a number of pathogens as an energy source.

Gas–liquid chromatographic assay of lipid-bound sialic acids: measurement of gangliosides in brain of several species

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1970
A method is described for analysis of gangliosides by GLC assay of the sialic acid component. Mild acid treatment in methanol converted the latter to methyl ketoside methyl ester, which was then chromatographed as the TMS derivative.

Sialidase Neu3 Induced Sialic Acid Disorder and Promoted Vascular Endothelial Injury Through Transcription Factor SP3

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Volume 30, Issue 9, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is still a major cause for the increasing mortality worldwide. The elevated metabolite N‐acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) was considered one of the important risk factors responsible for the initiation of endothelial impairment, then participated in atherosclerosis progression.

Identification of new participants in the rainbow trout () oocyte maturation and ovulation processes using cDNA microarrays [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
BACKGROUND: The hormonal control of oocyte maturation and ovulation as well as the molecular mechanisms of nuclear maturation have been thoroughly studied in fish. In contrast, the other molecular events occurring in the ovary during post-vitellogenesis

Nitrogen assimilation by E. coli in the mammalian intestine

open access: yesmBio
Nitrogen is an essential element for all living organisms, including Escherichia coli. Potential nitrogen sources are abundant in the intestine, but knowledge of those used specifically by E. coli to colonize remains limited. Here, we sought to determine

Untargeted Metabolomic and Lipidomic Profiles of Gingival Crevicular Fluid in the Context of Periodontitis

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Periodontology, Volume 53, Issue 5, Page 774-783, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim(s) This cross‐sectional clinical study aimed to explore the untargeted metabolomic and lipidomic profiles in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) obtained from healthy individuals and patients with periodontitis. Materials and Methods GCF was collected from 17 periodontally healthy and 19 periodontitis patients.

Hemagglutinin-esterase-fusion (HEF) protein of influenza C virus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Influenza C virus, a member of the Orthomyxoviridae family, causes flu-like disease but typically only with mild symptoms. Humans are the main reservoir of the virus, but it also infects pigs and dogs.

The Role of the Hexosamine-Sialic Acid Metabolic Pathway Mediated by GFPT1/NANS in c-Myc-Driven Hepatocellular CarcinomaSummary

open access: yesCellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Background & Aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) frequently involves metabolic reprogramming, which promotes oncogenesis and metastasis. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain insufficiently explored.

The Critical Role of GALNTs‐Regulated O‐GalNAc Glycosylation in Cancer Malignancy

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 8, 30 April 2026.
The GALNT family initiates mucin‐type O‐GalNAc glycosylation in the Golgi apparatus and how regulatory mechanisms, including GALNT relocalization and microRNA control, modulate this process. Dysregulated O‐GalNAc glycosylation alters key cellular behaviors and promotes cancer malignancy, highlighting its relevance to tumor progression as well as its ...
