N-Glycolylneuraminic acid specific lectin from Pilaglobosa snail

open access: yesBiochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1991
A N-glycolylneuraminic acid-specific lectin (PAL) has been purified from an albumin gland extract of the apple snail, Pila globosa. Purification is conducted on a bovine submaxillary mucin-Sepharose 4B affinity matrix followed by gel filtration on a Sepharose 6B column. The lectin agglutinates rabbit erythrocytes.

Detection of N-glycolylneuraminic acid biomarkers in sera from patients with ovarian cancer using an engineered N-glycolylneuraminic acid-specific lectin SubB2M [PDF]

open access: yesBiochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2018
N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc)-containing glycans are a prominent form of aberrant glycosylation found in human tumor cells and have been proposed as cancer biomarkers. The B subunit of the subtilase cytotoxin (SubB) produced by Shiga toxigenic Escherichia coli recognises Neu5Gc containing glycans. We have previously engineered this lectin, SubB2M,

Microwave-assisted synthesis of N-glycolylneuraminic acid derivatives

open access: yesTetrahedron Letters, 2013
Abstract A rapid, efficient and scalable synthesis of biologically-relevant N-glycolylneuraminic acid derivatives from the natural N-acetyl (Neu5Ac) precursors has been developed. Microwave irradiation provides accelerated de-N-acetylation compared to more traditional methods, with optimised NaOH-promoted de-N-acetylation in only 15 min. The prepared

Straightforward access to 2,3- and 3,4-unsaturated derivatives of N-glycolylneuraminic acid [PDF]

open access: yesTetrahedron, 2020
The facile syntheses of previously unreported 2,3- and 3,4-unsaturated derivatives of N-glycolylneuraminic acid are herein described. The procedure involves a ring-opening of the 4,5-oxazoline of N-acetylneuraminic acid, the acylation of the intermediate

Current views on N-glycolylneuraminic acid in therapeutic recombinant proteins

Trends in Pharmacological Sciences, 2021
The incorporation of the non-human N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) in therapeutic recombinant proteins raises clinical concerns due to its immunogenic potential and the high prevalence of pre-existing anti-Neu5Gc antibodies in humans. The scientific literature is ambiguous regarding the actual impact of Neu5Gc-containing biotherapeutics as no severe

N-Glycolylneuraminic Acid Xenoantigen Contamination of Human Embryonic and Mesenchymal Stem Cells Is Substantially Reversible

open access: yesStem Cells, 2007
Human embryonic and mesenchymal stem cell therapies may offer significant benefit to a large number of patients. Recently, however, human embryonic stem cell lines cultured on mouse feeder cells were reported to be contaminated by the xeno-carbohydrate N-

Exposure to nonmicrobial N-glycolylneuraminic acid protects farmers' children against airway inflammation and colitis [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2018
BACKGROUND: Childhood exposure to a farm environment has been shown to protect against the development of inflammatory diseases, such as allergy, asthma, and inflammatory bowel disease.
