AbstractPigs deficient in three glycosyltransferase enzymes (triple‐knockout [TKO] pigs) and expressing “protective” human transgenes are likely sources of organs for transplantation into human recipients. Testing of human sera against red blood cells (RBCs) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from TKO pigs has revealed minimal evidence of ...

Sialic acids are a family of 9 carbon α-keto acid monosaccharides. Owing to their terminal position on glycans, sialic acids are involved in cell adhesion and recognition events, host pathogen interactions, immune regulation and in disease processes such as cancer progression.

Catalytic preference of Salmonella typhimurium LT2 sialidase for N-acetylneuraminic acid residues over N-glycolylneuraminic acid residues [PDF]
In a comparison of sialidase activities toward N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) and N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc), we found that Salmonella typhimurium LT2 sialidase (STSA) hardly cleaved 4-methylumbelliferyl Neu5Gc (4MU-Neu5Gc).

Substitution of amino acid residue in influenza A virus hemagglutinin affects recognition of sialyl-oligosaccharides containing N-glycolylneuraminic acid [PDF]
Sialic acids are essential components of cell surface receptors used by influenza viruses. To determine the molecular mechanisms of viral recognition of two major species of sialic acids, N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) and N-glycolylneuraminic acid ...

Abstract Efficient synthesis of lauryl thioglycoside of Neu5Gc was accomplished from a known thioglycoside of Neu5Ac. The reactivities of the Neu5Gc thioglycoside for O-glycosidation by means of TMSOTf-NIS as a promoter system were investigated, and the thioglycoside showed good activities with simple alcohols. In addition to the simple alcohols, the
