Untangling direct and domain-mediated interactions between nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in DHA-rich membranes [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
At the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) self-associates to give rise to rapid muscle movement. While lipid domains have maintained nAChR aggregates in-vitro, their specific roles in nAChR clustering are currently unknown. In the present study, we carried out coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations (CG-MD)

How Mutations in the nAChRs Can Cause ADNFLE Epilepsy [PDF]

open access: yesEpilepsia, 2002
Summary:  Purpose: The linkage between autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (ADNFLE) and neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor has been strongly reinforced by the report of five distinct mutations in the two genes coding for the major brain α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine (ACh) receptors.

Opening a hydrophobic gate: the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor as an example [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2009
To what extent must a hydrophobic gate expand for the channel to count as open? We address this question using the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) as the exemplar. The nAChR is an integral membrane protein which forms a cation selective channel gated by neurotransmitter binding to its extracellular domain.

Nicotine-Upregulation of Alpha 7 nAChR in Xenopus Oocytes [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2016
The alpha 7 (α7) subtype of nAChR appears to play critical roles in learning, cognition, and various neuropathologies including nicotine addiction. Nicotine-upregulation of α7 Rs may play a significant role in the latter phenomenon. But whether nicotine-upregulation of α7 Rs reliably occurs, and its underlying mechanism(s), are largely unknown ...

Boundary lipids of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor: spontaneous partitioning via coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Reconstituted nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) exhibit significant gain-of-function upon addition of cholesterol to reconstitution mixtures, and cholesterol affects organization of nAChRs within domain-forming membranes, but whether nAChR partitions to cholesterol-rich liquid-ordered ("raft" or $l_o$) domains or cholesterol-poor liquid ...

On half-line spectra for a class of non-self-adjoint Hill operators [PDF]

open access: yesMath. Nachr. 261-262: 171-175 (2003), 2003
In 1980, Gasymov showed that non-self-adjoint Hill operators with complex-valued periodic potentials of the type $V(x)=\sum_{k=1}^{\infty} a_k e^{ikx}$, with $\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}|a_k|<\infty$, have spectra $[0, \infty)$. In this note, we provide an alternative and elementary proof of this result.

Homogeneous Coordinates and Quotient Presentations for Toric Varieties [PDF]

open access: yesMath. Nachr. 246-247, 5-19 (2002), 2000
Generalizing cones over projective toric varieties, we present arbitrary toric varieties as quotients of quasiaffine toric varieties. Such quotient presentations correspond to groups of Weil divisors generating the topology. Groups comprising Cartier divisors define free quotients, whereas $\QQ$-Cartier divisors define geometric quotients.
