Effect of aging on the development and progression of alcohol‐associated liver disease

open access: yesAlcohol, Clinical and Experimental Research, Volume 49, Issue 7, Page 1412-1423, July 2025.
Age is a predictor for alcohol‐associated liver disease (ALD)‐related mortality. This study investigates the effects of aging on the ethanol‐induced development and progression of ALD in rats. This study demonstrates that chronic ethanol feeding increased liver injury markers and hepatic triglycerides across all age groups.

The interplay between non-esterified fatty acids and bovine peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors: results of an in vitro hybrid approach

open access: yesJournal of Animal Science and Biotechnology, 2020
Background In dairy cows circulating non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) increase early post-partum while liver and other tissues undergo adaptation to greater lipid metabolism, mainly regulated by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR).

Effects of hirudin-induced activation of nonenzymatic fibrinolysis during immobilization stress [PDF]

open access: yes
The specific inhibitor of thrombin, hirudin, was used for studying the mechanism of the activating effect of ACTH and adrenalin on nonenzymatic fibrinolytic activity (NEFA), the latter characterizing the function of the anticoagulation system (ACS ...

Reversal of Diabesity Through Modulating Sympathetic Inputs to Adipose Tissue Following Carotid Body Resection

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 241, Issue 7, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims The development of innovative strategies to treat diabesity and its comorbidities is of major societal importance. The carotid bodies (CB), classically defined as O2 sensors, are also metabolic sensors whose dysfunction contributes to the genesis and progression of metabolic disturbances. Here, we tested the hypothesis that

Serum albumin-fatty acid saturation test

open access: yesMethodsX, 2019
Circulating non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) are toxic to mammalian cells. They increase in diseases such as diabetes and sepsis. Herein we propose a serum albumin-fatty acid saturation test.

Reduction of plasma NEFA concentration by nicotinic acid enhances the response to insulin in feed-restricted Holstein cows.

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2007
The objective was to investigate the relationship between elevated plasma nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentration and insulin resistance in Holstein cows.

High-fat meals rich in EPA plus DHA compared with DHA only have differential effects on postprandial lipemia and plasma 8-isoprostane F-2 alpha concentrations relative to a control high-oleic acid meal: a randomized controlled trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background: Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) plus docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplementation has beneficial cardiovascular effects, but postprandial influences of these individual fatty acids are unclear. Objectives: The primary objective was to determine the

Birth outcome in relation to licorice consumption during pregnancy.

open access: yes, 2001
A role for glucocorticoids is suspected in the etiology of low birth weight. The authors tested whether maternal consumption of glycyrrhizin (an inhibitor of cortisol metabolism) in licorice affects birth weight in humans. A sample of 1,049 Finnish women

The effect of road and sea transport on inflammatory, adrenocortical, metabolic and behavioural responses of weanling heifers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
peer-reviewedThe objective was to investigate the effect of transport on inflammatory, adrenocortical, metabolic and behavioural responses of weanling heifers transported from Ireland to Spain. Background: At the end of the grazing season, 60 Charolais ×
