A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Window of opportunity – potential of increase in profitability using modular compact plants and micro-reactor based flow processing

open access: yesGreen Processing and Synthesis, 2012
Recently, much focus has been given to a new type of chemical production plant, with the aim of a much faster time-to-market (“50% idea”) and better cash-flow revenue. The main enabling technology is to have the plants pre-manufactured and assembled by a

On the Net Present Value Rule for Educational Investments

open access: yesJournal of Political Economy, 1972
Focuses on the net present value rule for educational investments. Profitability of investment in education; Omission of direct educational costs from the benefit-cost calculations; Standards on the applicability of the net present value rule.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Scheduling Markovian PERT networks with maximum-NPV objective. [PDF]

open access: yes
We examine project scheduling with net-present-value objective and exponential activity durations, using a continuous-time Markov decision chain. Based on a judicious partitioning of the state space, we achieve a significant performance improvement ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

The value of tax shields is not equal to the present value of tax shields: A correction [PDF]

open access: yes
I correct some expressions in Fernández (2004) and provide a more general expression for the value of tax shields. This expression is the difference between the present values of two different cash flows, each with its own risk: the present value of ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Feasibility of Bifacial Photovoltaics in Transport Infrastructure

open access: yesEnergies
Around the world, large-scale bifacial photovoltaics (BPV) modules are increasingly being used to generate clean electricity, given the cost of manufacturing is becoming comparable to conventional monofacial PV modules.
