Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Implementation of the nucleocortical pathways inside a spiking neural network model of cerebellar nuclei

open access: yes, 2021
The cerebellum is involved in a large number of neural processes, especially in motor control and motor learning. From a functional point of view, the Deep Cerebellar Nuclei (DCN) constitute the core of the cerebellar processing, as they exploit the ...

Genetic Signatures of Competitive Performance in Burmese Gamecocks: A Transcriptomic Analysis

open access: yesBiology
Understanding the genetic basis of high-performance animals is vital for biological insight and breeding. This study aimed to identify genetic factors distinguishing champion gamecocks (Gallus gallus domesticus) from less successful ones, representing ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Stochastic neural network models for gene regulatory networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Recent advances in gene-expression profiling technologies provide large amounts of gene expression data. This raises the possibility for a functional understanding of genome dynamics by means of mathematical modelling.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Evaluation and comparison of natural and synthetic retinoids on model of neural development [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Vitamin A and its derivatives, collectively termed retinoids, are a group of natural and synthetic molecules that are structurally and/or functionally analogous.

Notch promotes neural lineage entry by pluripotent embryonic stem cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
A central challenge in embryonic stem (ES) cell biology is to understand how to impose direction on primary lineage commitment. In basal culture conditions, the majority of ES cells convert asynchronously into neural cells.

Neuroplasticity of children in autism spectrum disorder

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychiatry
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that encompasses a range of symptoms including difficulties in verbal communication, social interaction, limited interests, and repetitive behaviors. Neuroplasticity refers to the structural
