Origin of Neuraminic Acid in Human Seminal Fluid [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1964
THE occurrence and possible function of the neuraminic acids in mammalian tissues and fluids is a matter of great interest. Large amounts of N-acetylneuraminic acid have been demonstrated in the seminal fluid of man1,2, bull3 and boar4. Analysis of the secretions of the accessory genital organs of the boar showed that the mucin from the bulbourethral ...

Beyond FimH: Diversity and Relevance of Carbohydrate‐Binding Fimbrial Proteins in Escherichia coli

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 26, Issue 17, September 15, 2025.
This review discusses fimbrial lectins found in Escherichia coli (E. coli) other than FimH, which could be targeted to treat E. coli pathogenicity as an alternative to antibiotic treatment. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is responsible for multiple diseases in humans and animals.

Neuraminic Acid as a Constituent of Human Cerebrospinal Fluid.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1956
Conclusions1. The neuraminic acid (NA) content of 49 samples of human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was studied. In all instances the quantitative relationship of neuraminic acid to the cerebrospinal fluid protein was far in excess of that prevalent in serum.

Nanomaterial‐Based Optical Biosensors for SARS‐CoV‐2 Detection: A Retrospective of the Pandemic

open access: yesAdvanced Sensor Research, Volume 4, Issue 9, September 2025.
This review discusses nanomaterial‐based optical biosensors developed for or adapted to the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2). It concludes by providing a perspective on how lessons learned during the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic may be applied for future research on nanomaterial‐based ...

Toward the Synthesis of 3,3‐Difluoro Deaminated Sialic Acid (C3DFKDN)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, Volume 28, Issue 30, August 19, 2025.
The synthesis of protected C3‐difluoro KDN (C3DFKDN), an unnatural derivative of the sialic acid member, KDN, and key building block for KDN‐based chemical probes, is reported. Its 12‐step synthetic route starts from commercially available methyl d‐mannopyranoside and key steps include a Reformatsky reaction with ethyl bromodifluoroacetate, alkylation ...

Polysialosides Outperform Sulfated Analogs for Binding with SARS‐CoV‐2

open access: yesSmall, Volume 21, Issue 34, August 28, 2025.
Both sulfated and sialylated glycans present on the cell surface act as co‐receptors for the SARS‐CoV‐2 attachment. Polysialylated and sulfated dendritic polyglycerols are studied for their binding with SARS‐CoV‐2. In solution, dendritic polyglycerol sialosides (dPGSAs) bind significantly stronger (low nm) to SARS‐CoV‐2 than their sulfated analogs ...

Lactic acid bacteria isolated from poultry protect the intestinal epithelial cells of chickens from in vitro wheat germ agglutinin-induced cytotoxicity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Poultry fed on wheat-based diets regularly ingest wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) that has toxic effects in vitro on intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) obtained from 14-d-old broilers.

Gut Microbiota Composition and Modulation in Developmental and Epileptic Encephalopathies

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 62, Issue 4, August 2025.
Clinical studies link gut microbiota (GM) composition to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) treatment response. In infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) mouse models, GM modulation via antibiotics, ketogenic diet (KD), fecal transplantation, or probiotics reduced epileptic spasms, while in Dravet syndrome (DS) models, the KD showed no anti‐seizure

Safety of lacto‐N‐tetraose (LNT) produced by a derivative strain (Escherichia coli K‐12 MG1655 INB_LNT_01) of E. coli K‐12 MG1655 (ATCC 700926) as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 23, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on lacto‐N‐tetraose (LNT) as a novel food (NF) pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The NF is mainly composed of the human‐identical milk oligosaccharide (HiMO) LNT, but it also contains lacto‐N ...

A structural and functional model for human bone sialoprotein [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Human bone sialoprotein (BSP) is an essential component of the extracellular matrix of bone. It is thought to be the primary nucleator of hydroxyapatite crystallization, and is known to bind to hydroxyapatite, collagen, and cells.
