Unstable cytoplasms in Hawaiian strains of Neurospora intermedia

Current Genetics, 1984
By subjecting a large sample of natural isolates of N. intermedia to prolonged serial subculturing, 26 cytoplasmic variants have been identified. These variants show senescence, and finally death at some strain-specific point in the subculture series. All senescent strains are from the Hawaiian archipelago, where their incidence in natural populations ...

MITOCHONDRIAL VARIANTS OFNEUROSPORA INTERMEDIAFROM NATURE

Canadian Journal of Genetics and Cytology, 1982
From a sample of 122 natural isolates of Neurospora intermedia collected recently from around the world, five variants had erratic stop-start growth patterns reminiscent of the phenotype of "stopper" laboratory extranuclear mutants of Neurospora crassa.

Senescence in natural populations of Neurospora intermedia

Mycological Research, 1993
We surveyed 132 natural isolates of N. intermedia for senescence. A total of 26 strains showed either symptoms reminiscent of senescence in Kalilo and Maranhar strains, or other types of aberrant growth. These strains were isolated from many different parts of the world.

Expression of senescence in Neurospora intermedia

Canadian Journal of Genetics and Cytology, 1986
Kalilo cytoplasms of Neurospora intermedia have been shown to express senescence in two ways. First, by the previously reported way of death in a subculture series, and second, as reported here, by growth cessation in a 50-cm race tube. Only those cultures that are sufficiently far advanced in the development of senescence will stop growth in the ...

The dynamics of mitochondrial plasmids in a Hawaiian population of Neurospora intermedia

Current Genetics, 1995
We analysed the distribution of mitochondrial plasmids among 82 Neurospora intermedia isolates from Hawaii; 74% of the isolates carried the neutral circular plasmid Han-2, whereas 38% contained the linear senescence-causing plasmid kalDNA. The distributions of the two plasmids are independent.

A recombinant plasmid carrying the mitochondrial plasmid sequence of Neurospora intermedia LaBelle yields new plasmid derivatives in Neurospora crassa transformants

Current Genetics, 1985
We have studied the efficacy of transformation of Neurospora crassa with a chimaeric plasmid. We constructed a recombinant plasmid, pMK2, consisting of the mitochondrial plasmid of N. intermedia LaBelle, a part of the qa gene cluster of Neurospora and the Escherichia coli plasmid pBR322.

The kalilo senescence plasmid of Neurospora intermedia has covalently-linked 5? terminal proteins

Current Genetics, 1990
Kalilo is a linear plasmid associated with senescence in Neurospora. The terminal Eco R1 restriction fragments of this element are linked to a protein component which remains bound despite denaturation with high concentrations of SDS. Following digestion with proteinase K, the 5′ termini of the plasmid remain resistant to lambda exonuclease whereas the

Identity and characteristics of Neurospora intermedia responsible for oncom fermentation in Indonesia

Food Microbiology, 1986
Seventy-one Neurospora cultures were isolated from Oncom tahu based on soybean residues in the Jakarta-Bogor and from Oncom based on peanut presscake in the Lembang-Bandung regions of West Java. They were heterothallic and had 8-ascospore per ascus. In crosses with authentic reference cultures of three known heterothallic species, Neurospora intermedia,

Characterization and prevalence of a circular mitochondrial plasmid in senescence-prone isolates of Neurospora intermedia

Current Genetics, 2005
Genetic and molecular analyses of the phenomenon of senescence-i.e., irreversible loss of growth and reproductive potential upon subculturing-in Neurospora intermedia strain M1991-60A, collected from Maddur in southern India, showed the presence of plasmid pMaddur1, which is homologous to the senescence-inducing circular mitochondrial plasmid, pVarkud.
