Neutrophil elastase inhibition effectively rescued angiopoietin-1 decrease and inhibits glial scar after spinal cord injury

open access: yesActa Neuropathologica Communications, 2018
After spinal cord injury (SCI), neutrophil elastase (NE) released at injury site disrupts vascular endothelium integrity and stabilization. Angiopoietins (ANGPTs) are vascular growth factors that play an important role in vascular stabilization.

Role of neutrophil elastase in hypersecretion in asthma [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Respiratory Journal, 1999
Goblet cell (GC) hyperplasia and mucous plugging are common in patients with acute asthma. These patients also show neutrophil recruitment into the airways. Neutrophils contain elastase, a potent secretagogue in airways. Therefore, it was reasoned that neutrophil recruitment, by releasing elastase, could result in GC hypersecretion.

Functional Specialization of Respiratory and Olfactory Mucus Revealed by Proteomic Profiling

open access: yesInternational Forum of Allergy &Rhinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Mucus overlies the nasal mucosa in the respiratory and olfactory regions, which perform distinct physiological functions. However, proteomic differences between respiratory mucosa (RM) and olfactory cleft (OC) mucus remain unclear.

The role of the host—Neutrophil biology

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Neutrophilic polymorphonuclear leukocytes (neutrophils) are myeloid cells packed with lysosomal granules (hence also called granulocytes) that contain a formidable antimicrobial arsenal. They are terminally differentiated cells that play a critical role in acute and chronic inflammation, as well as in the resolution of inflammation and wound ...

Neutrophil extracellular traps in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2017
Tuberculosis is a devastating infectious disease causing many deaths worldwide. Recent investigations have implicated neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in the host response to tuberculosis. The aim of the current study was to obtain evidence for NETs

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps Block Fibrinolysis in Ischemic Stroke

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objectives Intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) failure in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is frequent, but its causes remain elusive. We investigated whether biologically relevant intrathrombus concentrations of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) were achieved in failed IVT and whether neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) contributed to this therapeutic ...

Characterisation of Neutropenia-Associated Neutrophil Elastase Mutations in a Murine Differentiation Model In Vitro and In Vivo. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Severe congenital neutropenia (SCN) is characterised by a differentiation block in the bone marrow and low neutrophil numbers in the peripheral blood, which correlates with increased risk of bacterial infections. Several underlying gene defects have been

Autoprocessing of neutrophil elastase near its active site reduces the efficiency of natural and synthetic elastase inhibitors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
An imbalance between neutrophil-derived proteases and extracellular inhibitors is widely regarded as an important pathogenic mechanism for lung injury. Despite intense efforts over the last three decades, attempts to develop small-molecule inhibitors for

Is neutrophil elastase the missing link between emphysema and fibrosis? Evidence from two mouse models

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2005
Background The separation of emphysema from fibrosis is not as clear-cut as it was thought in early studies. These two pathologies may be present at the same time in human lungs and in mice either instilled with elastolytic enzymes or bleomycin or ...
