Emergence of an ancient and pathogenic mammarenavirus

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections, 2023
Emerging zoonoses of wildlife origin caused by previously unknown agents are one of the most important challenges for human health. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau represents a unique ecological niche with diverse wildlife that harbours several human pathogens

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 600, Issue 17, Page 2526-2546, September 2026.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Mathematical Modeling of Pulse‐Seeded Metapopulation Dynamics for Andes Hantavirus Border Dispersal

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 8, Issue 9, September 2026.
A pulse‐seeded metapopulation SEIR model for Andes hantavirus maritime dispersal shows that heterogeneous quarantine compliance determines secondary outbreak risk. The weakest‐compliance country governs global containment, while uniform compliance above ∼65%$$ \sim 65\% $$ reduces the global reproduction number below unity.

Junin Virus Triggers Macrophage Activation and Modulates Polarization According to Viral Strain Pathogenicity

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2019
The New World arenavirus Junin (JUNV) is the etiological agent of Argentine hemorrhagic fever (AHF). Previous studies of human macrophage infection by the Old-World arenaviruses Mopeia and Lassa showed that while the non-pathogenic Mopeia virus ...

Research Direction and Science Evaluation: The Role of Coherence and Alignment

open access: yesJournal of Economics &Management Strategy, Volume 35, Issue 3, Page 437-474, Fall 2026.
ABSTRACT The decisions of funding agencies greatly influence the direction of scientific research; however, our understanding of how applicants' research directions affect the selection process remains limited. In this study, we investigate how a project's coherence with a scientist's previous work and its alignment with current scientific trends ...

Utilization of human DC-SIGN and L-SIGN for entry and infection of host cells by the New World arenavirus, Junín virus

open access: yesBiochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2013
The target cell tropism of enveloped viruses is regulated by interactions between viral proteins and cellular receptors determining susceptibility at a host cell, tissue or species level. However, a number of additional cell-surface moieties can also bind viral envelope glycoproteins and could act as capture receptors, serving as attachment factors to ...

Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells Exhibit High Transferrin Receptor Expression Without Iron Accumulation

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 56, Issue 6, June 2026.
• pDCs are defined by high surface TFRC expression and dynamic iron flux, distinguishing them from conventional dendritic cell subsets. • In the Iron proteome, pDC are enriched for mitochondrial heme and Fe–S proteins but have similar iron storage to cDC. • Iron chelation does not disrupt pDC type‐1 IFN production. ABSTRACT Plasmacytoid dendritic cells

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 600, Issue 10, Page 1420-1443, May 2026.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Arenavirus phylogeny: a new insight [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Arenaviridae is a worldwide distributed family, of enveloped, single stranded, RNA viruses. The arenaviruses were divided in two major groups (Old World and New World), based on serological properties and genetic data, as well as the geographic ...

The Current State of Vaccine Development for Specific Prophylactics of Arenaviral Hemorrhagic Fevers

open access: yesПроблемы особо опасных инфекций, 2018
Presently, the Arenavirus genus (Arenaviridae family) includes 26 individual species of viruses. It is divided into two main groups – Old World arenaviruses and New World arenaviruses.
