Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Unveiling a Shift in the Rotavirus Strains in Benin: Emergence of Reassortment Intergenogroup and Equine-like G3P[8] Strains in the Post-Vaccination Era

open access: yesViruses
While a global downward trend in rotavirus diarrhea cases has been observed following vaccine introduction, reassortment, genetic drift, and vaccine-escaping strains remain a concern, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Moving towards third-generation sequencing technologies

open access: yes, 2012
Within just the past few years, next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms have reduced the cost of DNA sequencing by several orders of magnitude. With these lower costs, DNA sequencing is increasingly powerful as a single-data format onto which a broad ...

Molecular insights into Solanum sisymbriifolium’s resistance against Globodera pallida via RNA-seq

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology
Background The presence of potato cyst nematodes (PCN) causes a significant risk to potato crops globally, leading to reduced yields and economic losses. While the plant Solanum sisymbriifolium is known for its resistance to PCN and can be used as a trap

Longitudinal analysis of the enteric virome in paediatric subjects from the Free State Province, South Africa, reveals early gut colonisation and temporal dynamics

open access: yesVirus Research
The gut of healthy neonates is devoid of viruses at birth, but rapidly becomes colonised by normal viral commensals that aid in important physiological functions like metabolism but can, in some instances, result in gastrointestinal illnesses.

SARS-CoV-2 variants from COVID-19 positive cases in the Free State province, South Africa from July 2020 to December 2021

open access: yesFrontiers in Virology, 2022
Since the COVID-19 outbreak emerged, SARS-CoV-2 has continuously evolved into variants with underlying mutations associated with increased transmissibility, potential escape from neutralizing antibodies, and disease severity.
