Accelerated and efficient neuronal differentiation of Sox1GFP mouse embryonic stem cells in vitro using nicotinamide [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A major challenge for advancement of clinical neuronal replacement therapies is the production of high yields of purified neuronal populations of appropriate phenotype with control over proliferation to prevent tumorigenesis.

An Ultrapotent, Ultraeconomical, Antifreeze Polypeptide

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Simple and inexpensive polypeptides composed of random copolymers of alanine and glutamic acid are effective antifreezes for applications in foods and biomedicine. The polypeptides, inspired by natural extremophile proteins, inhibit the growth of large ice crystals and prevent damage to sensitive biologics.

Implantable Light‐Powered Human Designer Cells for Electrical Energy Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by the eel's electric organ, a miniature implantable biohybrid device is developed to generate electricity under light activation. The device utilizes a light‐dependent ion gradient formation that induced by genetically engineered human designer cells that express light‐sensitive membrane ion channels and proton pumps, working in synergy with ...

Engineering Aging: Approaches to Model and Deconstruct Biological Complexity

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The macro‐experiences of aging are the result of an accumulation of micro‐changes that occur over time. Abstract The disparity between the global increase in life expectancy and the steady decline in health outcomes with age has been a major driver for developing new ways to research aging.

Is sensitization with nicotinamide and carbogen dependent on nicotinamide concentration at the time of irradiation?

open access: yesInternational Journal of Radiation Biology, 2004
To determine whether tumour radiosensitization and the therapeutic benefit of administering carbogen with nicotinamide depend upon irradiating at the time of peak drug concentration.Local tumour control of CaNT tumours in CBA mice and acute skin reactions in albino WHT mice were assessed after treatment with 10 X-ray fractions in air, carbogen alone or

Characterization of Sirt2 using conditional RNAi in mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Within the past eight years, RNA interference (RNAi) has emerged as a powerful experimental tool for gene function analysis in mice. Reversible control of shRNA mediated RNAi has been achieved by using a tetracycline (tet)-inducible promoter.

Exploring Functionally Enhanced BLP‐Trained Macrophage Subpopulations in S. Aureus Infection: Underlying Mechanisms and Therapeutic Significance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
BLP‐trained macrophages show augmented resistance to infection, but their mechanisms remain unclear. scRNA‐seq identified 13 BMDM subsets, with two novel anti‐inflammatory/antibacterial subpopulations (C5/C7) emerging post‐BLP training. BLP training activates NRF2, attenuates oxidative stress/ferroptosis, and boosts glycolysis/OXPHOS. Adoptive transfer

Nicotinamide in Murine Tuberculosis

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1955
SummaryExperiments were performed to assess the therapeutic effect of varying the dose and the time of initiation of treatment with nicotinamide in tuberculous mice. No activity was demonstrated for any substance tested that is related to this agent. It was found that treatment instituted prior to infection exerted a striking effect.
