A Prebiotic Pathway to Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide
AbstractEnzymes play a fundamental role in cellular metabolism. A wide range of enzymes require the presence of complementary coenzymes and cofactors to function properly. While coenzymes are believed to have been part of the last universal ancestor (LUCA) or have been present even earlier, the syntheses of crucial coenzymes like the redox‐active ...

Binding of nicotinamide–adenine dinucleotides to diphtheria toxin [PDF]
1. Changes in protein fluorescence have been utilized in determining the stoicheiometry and dissociation constants of the complexes of diphtheria toxin with NADH2, NAD, NADPH2 and NADP. 2. The binding stoicheiometry is 2moles of NADH2 and 1mole of NADPH2/mole of diphtheria toxin. The binding sites for NADH2 appear to be equivalent and independent.

An Ultrapotent, Ultraeconomical, Antifreeze Polypeptide
Simple and inexpensive polypeptides composed of random copolymers of alanine and glutamic acid are effective antifreezes for applications in foods and biomedicine. The polypeptides, inspired by natural extremophile proteins, inhibit the growth of large ice crystals and prevent damage to sensitive biologics.

Is there an interplay between adherence to mediterranean diet, antioxidant status, and vascular disease in atrial fibrillation patients? [PDF]
Mediterranean Diet (Med-Diet) is associated with reduced incidence of vascular events (VEs) in atrial fibrillation (AF), but the mechanism accounting for its beneficial effect is only partially known.

Self‐Sterilizing Face Mask Employing Enzymatic Power Generation
Electric face mask with flexible biofuel cell integration for on‐the‐go sterilization is developed utilizing ethanol oxidation via alcohol dehydrogenase, and oxygen reduction via bilirubin oxidase. Modified face mask exhibited bacterial death rates of 40–60% at only 20 µA of electric current, easily generated by the biofuel cell continuously over hours

Roles of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+) in Biological Systems
NAD+ has emerged as a crucial element in both bioenergetic and signaling pathways since it acts as a key regulator of cellular and organism homeostasis. NAD+ is a coenzyme in redox reactions, a donor of adenosine diphosphate-ribose (ADPr) moieties in ADP-

Cytosolic redox components regulate protein homeostasis via additional localisation in the mitochondrial intermembrane space [PDF]
Oxidative protein folding is confined to the bacterial periplasm, endoplasmic reticulum and the mitochondrial intermembrane space. Maintaining a redox balance requires the presence of reductive pathways.

Treatment of MPTP‐incubated cells with NAD+‐boosters increase the UPRmt/mitophagy‐related mitochondria quality control (MQC). Disturbed plasma UPRmt‐mitophagy‐mediated MQC profiles in PD patient samples. NMN inhibits motor deficit and forestalls neuropathology phenotypes of PD mice, which is required the atf4‐medicated UPRmt pathway.
