Both conscious and unconscious memory mechanisms contribute to the rewarding effects of nicotine and other drugs of abuse. In this issue of Neuron, Tang and Dani use in vivo measures of synaptic plasticity in freely moving mice to link nicotine-induced dopamine release in hippocampus to LTP induction and behavioral reinforcement.

Cholinergic modulation in the vertebrate auditory pathway
Acetylcholine (ACh) is a prevalent neurotransmitter throughout the nervous system. In the brain, ACh is widely regarded as a potent neuromodulator. In neurons, ACh signals are conferred through a variety of receptors that influence a broad range of ...

We have previously shown that chronic donepezil treatment induces nicotinic acetylcholine receptor up-regulation and enhances the sensitivity of the neurons to the neuroprotective effect of donepezil. Further analyses revealed that the nicotinic receptor

Ingestion of A Common Plant’s Leaves Leads to Acute Respiratory Arrest and Paralysis: A Case Report
Background: Nicotiana glauca is a plant known to cause acute toxicity upon ingestion or dermal exposure due to the nicotinic alkaloid, anabasine. Nicotinic alkaloids cause toxicity by acting as agonists on nicotinic-type acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs).

Nicotine strongly activates dendritic cell-mediated adaptive immunity - potential role for progression of atherosclerotic lesions [PDF]
Background - Antigen-presenting cells (APCs) such as monocytes and dendritic cells (DCs) stimulate T-cell proliferation and activation in the course of adaptive immunity.

Erythrina mulungu alkaloids are potent inhibitors of neuronal nicotinic receptor currents in mammalian cells. [PDF]
Crude extracts and three isolated alkaloids from Erythrina mulungu plants have shown anxiolytic effects in different animal models. We investigated whether these alkaloids could affect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and if they are selective for ...

Both cg12821679MAPRE3 methylation and MAPRE3 expression are significantly associated with overall survival (OS) of non‐small cell lung cancer. Meanwhile, MAPRE3 expression significantly modified the effect of smoking cessation on OS. Smoking cessation benefits OS merely for patients with high MAPRE3 expression.
