Process Simulation and Techno-Economic Analysis of Large-Scale Bioproduction of Sweet Protein Thaumatin II

open access: yesFoods, 2021
There are currently worldwide efforts to reduce sugar intake due to the various adverse health effects linked with the overconsumption of sugars. Artificial sweeteners have been used as an alternative to nutritive sugars in numerous applications; however,

Advancements in CO2 Capture Technologies: A Review of Amine Absorption and Alternative Methods for Post‐Combustion Integration

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Carbon capture technologies are poised to become one of the primary focuses regarding the achievement of net‐zero emissions by the year 2050. In these technologies, particular attention is given to post‐combustion CO2 capture, which is more easily implemented at existing power stations and other industries.

Effects of Non-Nutritive Sweetener Mixers compared to Carbohydrate Mixers on Alcohol Pharmacokinetics and Patient-Reported Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

open access: yesInternational Journal of Medical Students
Background: Alcohol-associated accidents pose a major global health burden, accounting for 4.7% of all deaths and 4.6% of total disability-adjusted life years. Alcohol impairs psychomotor performance, driving ability, and risk perception.

Modulating Taste Perception in Newly Weaned Piglets: The Role of Palatability Additives in Enhancing Feed Intake and Performance

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Palatability enhancers modulate taste and smell, increasing feed acceptance, reducing weaning stress, and improving piglet performance. ABSTRACT The continuous growth of global agribusiness stimulates the search for alternatives that can enhance the performance and quality of life of production animals.

Health outcomes of non-nutritive sweeteners: analysis of the research landscape

open access: yesNutrition Journal, 2017
Background Food products containing non-nutritive sweeteners (NNSs) instead of sugar have become increasingly popular in the last decades. Their appeal is obviously related to their calorie-free sweet taste.

Evidence supporting oral sensitivity to complex carbohydrates independent of sweet taste sensitivity in humans. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Compared to simple sugars, complex carbohydrates have been assumed invisible to taste. However, two recent studies proposed that there may be a perceivable taste quality elicited by complex carbohydrates independent of sweet taste.

On the importance of including both sexes in animal studies – insights from home‐cage monitoring

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A review of behavioural studies using home‐cage monitoring (HCM) systems revealed that over 61% of studies used only male subjects, with only 24% including both sexes, despite evidence of substantial behavioural differences between male and female animals. This bias could influence the outcomes of biomedical research.

Environmental and local habitat variables as predictors of trophic interactions in subtidal rocky reefs along the SE Pacific coast

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Temperature generally drives latitudinal patterns in the strength of trophic interactions, including consumption rates. However, local community and other environmental conditions might also affect consumption, disrupting latitudinal gradients, which results in complex large‐scale patterns.
