Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

Minority variant analysis of chikungunya virus nonstructural proteins.

open access: yes, 2016
Schematic representation of the chikungunya virus nonstructural proteins is represented above the graph. Nonstructural domains represent the following: nsP1, nonstructural protein 1, genome nucleotides 77–1681, MT = methyltransferase domain (amino acids ...

Towards understanding of the replication and pathogenesis of dengue infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Dengue is the most important human viral disease transmitted by arthropod vectors and over half of the world's population live in areas at risk of infection. Currently there is neither specific treatment nor vaccine to tackle this emerging disease. The

Innate Immune Evasion Mediated by Flaviviridae Non-Structural Proteins

open access: yesViruses, 2017
Flaviviridae-caused diseases are a critical, emerging public health problem worldwide. Flaviviridae infections usually cause severe, acute or chronic diseases, such as liver damage and liver cancer resulting from a hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and ...

Plasma metabolomics and gene regulatory networks analysis reveal the role of nonstructural SARS-CoV-2 viral proteins in metabolic dysregulation in COVID-19 patients

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Metabolomic analysis of blood plasma samples from COVID-19 patients is a promising approach allowing for the evaluation of disease progression. We performed the metabolomic analysis of plasma samples of 30 COVID-19 patients and the 19 controls using the ...

Hemipteran vectors of stylet‐borne plant viruses: Aphids lead the charge

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Among all sap‐feeding hemipterans, aphids stand out by far as the most important vectors of noncirculative plant viruses. Compared to whiteflies and mealybugs, aphids’ highly specialized stylet anatomy and distinct feeding behaviors contribute, together with other features of their biology, to their remarkable efficiency in transmitting stylet‐borne ...

Genetic Characterization of the Rotavirus Nonstructural Protein, NSP4

open access: yesVirology, 1997
The rotavirus nonstructural protein NSP4 plays a role in viral assembly by acting as an intracellular receptor for single-shelled particles and assisting in the translocation of these particles across the endoplasmic reticulum. Recently, NSP4 has been implicated in rotavirus virulence and is thought to act as an enterotoxin which triggers chloride ...

A nonstructural viral protein expressed by a recombinant vaccinia virus protects against lethal cytomegalovirus infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
The nonstructural immediate-early protein pp89 of murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) is the first viral protein synthesized after infection and has a regulatory function in viral gene expression. Despite its localization in the nucleus of infected cells, pp89

Functional analysis of the Bunyamwera orthobunyavirus Gc glycoprotein [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The virion glycoproteins Gn and Gc of Bunyamwera orthobunyavirus (BUNV, family Bunyaviridae) are encoded by the M RNA genome segment and have roles in both viral attachment and membrane fusion.
