Bromoacetate Olefination Protocol for Norbixin and Julia–Kocienski Olefination for Its Ester Syntheses [PDF]

open access: yesACS Omega, 2019
A new olefination protocol utilizing ethyl bromoacetate was highlighted, in which magnesium enolate of the ester coupled with C20 dialdehyde 6, and double eliminations of the protected hydroxyl groups and bromine atoms of the coupling bromohydrin product, efficiently produced norbixin 1 after concomitant hydrolysis of the ester.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects and Photo- and Neuro-Protective Properties of BIO203, a New Amide Conjugate of Norbixin, in Development for the Treatment of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2023
9′-cis-norbixin (norbixin/BIO201) protects RPE cells against phototoxicity induced by blue light and N-retinylidene-N-retinylethanolamine (A2E) in vitro and preserves visual functions in animal models of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in ...

Norbixin Protects Retinal Pigmented Epithelium Cells and Photoreceptors against A2E-Mediated Phototoxicity In Vitro and In Vivo. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
The accumulation of N-retinylidene-N-retinylethanolamine (A2E, a toxic by-product of the visual pigment cycle) in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a major cause of visual impairment in the elderly.

Determination of bixin and norbixin in meat using liquid chromatography and photodiode array detection [PDF]

open access: yesFood Additives & Contaminants: Part A, 2009
The development of an analytical method that enables routine analysis of annatto dye, specifically bixin and norbixin, in meat tissue is described. Liquid-solid extraction was carried out using acetonitrile. Analysis was by HPLC with photodiode array detection using two fixed wavelengths (458 and 486 nm). The possibilities of ion trap mass spectrometry

Morphological, Structural, and Thermal Properties of Microbial Carotenoids Microencapsulated by Spray-Drying Using Different Combinations of Wall Materials. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Food Sci
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the spray‐drying encapsulation of carotenoid‐rich extracts produced by Sporidiobolus salmonicolor, with the optimization of a ternary wall system of gum arabic (GA), inulin (IN), and corn starch (ST). Carotenoids were produced in a semi‐continuous bioreactor, extracted with organic solvents, and microencapsulated by spray ...

Short communication: Norbixin and bixin partitioning in Cheddar cheese and whey [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2014
The Cheddar cheese colorant annatto is present in whey and must be removed by bleaching. Chemical bleaching negatively affects the flavor of dried whey ingredients, which has established a need for a better understanding of the primary colorant in annatto, norbixin, along with cheese color alternatives.
