Norharman and anxiety disorders

Acta Neuropsychiatrica, 1996
SummaryNorharman is a ß-carboline, possibly of endogenous origin, although cigarette smoking and food are sources too. In brain specific binding sites have been demonstrated. In higher doses norharman binds to benzodiazepine receptors and has MAO-B inhibitory activity.

Photochemistry of norharmane in aqueous solution

Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences, 2009
The photochemistry of norharmane (9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole) in acidic (pH 5.0+/-0.1) and alkaline (pH 10.0+/-0.1) aqueous solutions was studied. The photochemical reactions were monitored by TLC, UV/VIS absorption spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), electronic ionization-mass spectrometry (EI-MS), UV-laser desorption/ionization ...

Comutagenic effect of norharman with aminopyridine derivatives

Mutation Research Letters, 1982
The mutagenicities of 3 monoaminopyridines, 4 methyl-substituted monoaminopyridines and 3 diaminopyridines were tested with or without norharman in the Salmonella assay system. None of the compounds was mutagenic without norharman. However, 3-aminopyridine and 2-amino-3-methylpyridine were mutagenic in the presence of norharman and S9 mix; 3 ...

Photochemical and sonochemical reactions of norharmane

Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: Chemistry, 1996
In this work, a study on the photochemical and sonochemical behaviour of norharmane in halomethane media (dichloromethane, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and dibromomethane) is presented. When solutions of norharmane in these media are irradiated with UV light or sonicated with ultrasound at 20 or 50 kHz, the cationic species of norharmane appears in

Effect of norharman on the mutagenicity of toluidine metabolites

Toxicology Letters, 1989
Among the different metabolites of o-toluidine only the nitroso and hydroxylamino derivatives were found to be very potent frameshift mutagens in the presence of the co-mutagen norharman and S9. In the absence of norharman and S9 they are only base pair mutagens.

Norharman and alcohol-dependency in male Wistar rats

European Neuropsychopharmacology, 2002
We examined the effects of ethanol ingestion to rats on levels of the beta-carboline norharman in plasma, brain and liver at the end of ethanol ingestion and 10 h after withdrawal. We also investigated the effect of exogenously administered norharman on the behavioural signs of alcohol withdrawal.

Chronic effects of norharman in rats treated with aniline

Toxicology Letters, 1980
The carcinogenic effects of aniline and norharman given alone or in combination were examined in rats. Neoplastic changes including hyperplastic changes of the urinary bladder were not found in all groups. Papillomas of forestomach were observed in 5 rats out of 110 rats. However, this was not significantly different among the groups. Pyelonephritis or

Mutagenicities of mono-nitrobenzene derivatives in the presence of norharman

Mutation Research Letters, 1983
The mutagenicities of 22 mono-nitrobenzene derivatives, i.e., nitrobenzene [98-95-3] and the ortho, meta and para isomers of nitrotoluene [88-72-2, 99-08-1, 99-99-0], nitrophenol [88-75-5, 554-84-7, 100-02-7], nitroanisole [91-23-6, 555-03-3, 100-17-4], nitrochlorobenzene [88-73-3, 121-73-3, 100-00-5], nitrobenzoic acid [552-16-9, 121-92-6, 62-23-7 ...

Prototropic behavior of norharmane within ionic liquids

Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: Chemistry, 2021
Abstract Ionic liquids are established as alternate solvents for several traditional organic solvents as well as aqueous-based media in many areas of chemistry. Proton transfer reactions exhibit a high dependency on the nature of the solubilizing media.

Effects of the co-mutagen norharman in rats

Toxicology Letters, 1979
Abstract Studies were made on the acute and subacute toxic effects of the co-mutagen norharman when given orally to male Fischer strain rats. Animals were given diets containing 1500 ppm of norharman for 28 days, and 3 or 6 animals were killed for examination on days 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28.
