Canonical and non‐canonical functions of proteins regulating mitochondrial dynamics in mammalian physiology

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles that continuously remodel their architecture through coordinated cycles of fusion and fission. This review examines the four key GTPases that orchestrate mitochondrial dynamics in mammals: MFN1, MFN2, OPA1, and DRP1.

Intervertebral Disc Degeneration and Regeneration: New Molecular Mechanisms and Therapeutics

open access: yesCells
The intervertebral disc (IVD) is a soft tissue that constitutes the spinal column together with the vertebrae, and consists of the central nucleus pulposus (gelatinous tissue) and the annulus fibrosus (rich in fibrous tissue) that surrounds the nucleus ...

MANAJEMEN NYERI PASIEN RAWAT JALAN PADA KASUS HERNIA NUKLEUS PULPOSUS MELALUI CORE STABILITY

open access: yesJurnal Vokasi Indonesia, 2014
Herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) is a situation where the annulus fibrosus along nucleus pulposus protruding into the spinal canal. HNP patients often complain of back pain radiating to the lower limbs, especially when bending activity.

Lost in Translation: Why Biologic Therapies for Intervertebral Disc Degeneration and Low Back Pain Have Not Reached the Clinic (Yet)

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 3, September 2026.
From preclinical promise to clinical translation in intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Robust preclinical evidence supports a range of biologic therapies, with consistent improvements in imaging, extracellular matrix composition, inflammation, and behavior.

Comparison of Adjacent Segment Degeneration After Nonrigid Fixation System and Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion for Single-Level Lumbar Disc Herniation: A New Method of MRI Analysis of Lumbar Nucleus Pulposus Volume

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Surgery, 2018
Purpose: To evaluate the influence of a nonrigid fixation system and posterior lumbar interbody fusion on adjacent intervertebral disc degeneration by using MRI analysis of lumbar nucleus pulposus volume for single-level lumbar disc herniation. Materials

Overexpression of microRNA-185 alleviates intervertebral disc degeneration through inactivation of the Wnt/-catenin signaling pathway and downregulation of Galectin-3

open access: yesMolecular Pain, 2020
Background Recent studies have found that microRNAs (miRNAs) play a critical role in development and progression of intervertebral disc degeneration. In the present study, we examined the role of miR-185 in nucleus pulposus cell behavior in vitro and the

Galectin‐4: A Novel Mediator of Human Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 3, September 2026.
Galectin‐4 correlates with intervertebral disc degeneration, independent of age, sex, or underlying pathology. Functionally, it activates NF‐κB signaling and induces pro‐inflammatory and matrix‐degrading responses, with stronger effects in nucleus pulposus cells, identifying it as a novel molecular player in disc degeneration.

A Porcine Model of Intervertebral Disc Injury Recapitulates Human Discogenic Pain Via Notochordal Cell Loss and Pain‐Inducing Nucleus Pulposus Cell Emergence

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 3, September 2026.
A porcine model of disc injury recapitulates key clinical, histological, and molecular features of human discogenic low back pain. Multi‐omics analyses identify a shift from notochordal cells to pain‐associated nucleus pulposus cells as a potential driver of disease progression. ABSTRACT Background Lower back pain (LBP) is one of the most common causes

Serglycin secreted by late-stage nucleus pulposus cells is a biomarker of intervertebral disc degeneration

open access: yesNature Communications
Intervertebral disc degeneration is a natural process during aging and a leading cause of lower back pain. Here, we generate a comprehensive atlas of nucleus pulposus cells using single-cell RNA-seq analysis of human nucleus pulposus tissues (three males

Semi‐Automated μCT‐Based Modeling of Vertebral Bony Endplate Microporosity and Mechanical Properties: Linking Microstructure to Inferred Mechanical Performance

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Background The vertebral bony endplate (BEP) plays a role in regulating both mechanical load transfer and nutrient transport to the intervertebral disc, functions strongly influenced by its microstructural porosity. Variations in porosity impact bone strength, elasticity, and solute diffusion, affecting its overall mechanical competence ...
