An analysis of the performance of an artificial wetland for nutrient removal in solar saltworks

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Botany, 2002
A small artificial wetland was constructed through which intake water flowed before entering the initial pond of a solar saltworks. This trial wetland was designed for the removal of excessive nutrients from the water as the system is becoming hypertrophic.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Polystyrene microplastics impair nutrient removal in AAO systems by disrupting microbial communities and functional genes

open access: yesEmerging Contaminants
Biological nutrient removal in anaerobic–anoxic–oxic (AAO) systems is central to modern wastewater treatment, relying on the stability and activity of specialized microbial communities.

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

Start-up of a nutrient removal system using Scenedesmus vacuolatus and Chlorella vulgaris biofilms

open access: yesBioresources and Bioprocessing, 2019
Microalgal biofilm-based technologies are of strong interest due to their high biomass concentrations and ability to remove nutrients from wastewater, utilize CO2 and produce secondary valuable products. This study investigated the biomass production and

Sustainable and green polylactic acid-based membrane embedded with self-assembled positively charged f-MWCNTs/GO nanohybrids for the removal of nutrients from wastewater

open access: yesnpj Clean Water, 2022
In this study, the synthesis, and chemical-physical characterization of self-assembled positively charged multi-walled carbon nanotubes/graphene oxide (f-MWCNTs)/(GO)-nanohybrids into adsorptive PLA-based membranes were investigated.

STELLA software as a tool for modelling phosphorus removal in a constructed wetland employing dewatered alum sludge as main substrate

open access: yes, 2011
A dynamic simulation model was developed for the removal of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) from the vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCW) using a dynamic software program called STELLA (structural thinking, experiential learning laboratory with ...
