The Geometry of Layer 2/3 Cortical Sound Processing in Slow Wave Sleep

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sleep is associated with a sensory disconnection whose mechanisms remain elusive. Large neuronal population recordings in the auditory cortex revealed that, in NREM sleep, the neural code for sounds is highly similar to wakefulness, but coordinated modulations of neuron responsiveness intermittently disconnect the local cortical networks from sensory ...

Odor induced functional connectivity alteration of POC-anterior frontal cortex-medial temporal cortex in patients with mild cognitive impairment

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience
BackgroundMild cognitive impairment (MCI) is associated with an increased risk of dementia in older adults. Olfactory impairment may indicate prodromal dementia, yet its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood.

Characterizing functional pathways of the human olfactory system

open access: yeseLife, 2019
The central processing pathways of the human olfactory system are not fully understood. The olfactory bulb projects directly to a number of cortical brain structures, but the distinct networks formed by projections from each of these structures to the ...

Biochemical and Genetic Studies of UBR3, a Ubiquitin Ligase with a Function in Olfactory and Other Sensory Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Our previous work identified E3 ubiquitin ligases, termed UBR1-UBR7, that contain the ~70-residue UBR box, a motif important for the targeting of N-end rule substrates.

Microglial HVCN1 Deficiency Improves Movement and Survival of SOD1G93A ALS Mice by Enhancing Microglial Migration and Neuroprotection

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Hydrogen voltage gated channel 1 (HVCN1) is upregulated in microglia of both ALS patients and its mouse model. HVCN1 deficiency enhances microglial migration via suppressing Akt signaling, promotes neurotrophic capacity and motor function, and prolongs survival of the SOD1G93A ALS mice. This study identifies HVCN1 as a novel, promising druggable target

Strong Single-Fiber Sensory Inputs to Olfactory Cortex: Implications for Olfactory Coding [PDF]

open access: yesNeuron, 2006
Olfactory information is first encoded in a combinatorial fashion by olfactory bulb glomeruli, which individually represent distinct chemical features of odors. This information is then transmitted to piriform (olfactory) cortex, via axons of olfactory bulb mitral and tufted (M/T) cells, where it is presumed to form the odor percept.

Adenylyl Cyclase 8 in Dorsal CA1 Neurons Prevents Depressive‐Like Behaviors by Maintaining Neuronal Excitability and Glutamatergic Neurotransmission Through TIP39‐PTH2R Signaling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Depression, a prevalent neuropsychiatric disorder with unclear pathogenesis, involves dysfunctional adenylyl cyclase 8 (Adcy8) as a key risk factor. Chronic stress selectively reduces Adcy8 expression in the dorsal CA1 (dCA1) neurons. Depletion of Adcy8 in dCA1 excitatory neurons induces depressive‐like behaviors by impairing neuronal excitability and ...
