Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase-Dependent Antagonism in Mammalian Olfactory Receptor Neurons

open access: yesJournal of Neuroscience, 2011
Phosphoinositide signaling, in particular, phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling, has been implicated in mediating inhibitory odorant input to mammalian olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs).

Calcium-stores mediate adaptation in axon terminals of Olfactory Receptor Neurons in Drosophila

open access: yesBMC Neuroscience, 2011
BackgroundIn vertebrates and invertebrates, sensory neurons adapt to variable ambient conditions, such as the duration or repetition of a stimulus, a physiological mechanism considered as a simple form of non-associative learning and neuronal plasticity.

Differential Contributions of Olfactory Receptor Neurons in a Drosophila Olfactory Circuit. [PDF]

open access: yeseNeuro, 2016
AbstractThe ability of an animal to detect, discriminate, and respond to odors depends on the functions of its olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs). The extent to which each ORN, upon activation, contributes to chemotaxis is not well understood. We hypothesized that strong activation of each ORN elicits a different behavioral response in theDrosophila ...

Effect of acute copper sulfate exposure on olfactory responses to amino acids and pheromones in goldfish (Carassius auratus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Exposure of olfactory epithelium to environmentally relevant concentrations of copper disrupts olfaction in fish. To examine the dynamics of recovery at both functional and morphological levels after acute copper exposure, unilateral exposure of ...

Lhx2/Ldb1-mediated trans interactions regulate olfactory receptor choice

open access: yesNature, 2018
The genome is partitioned into topologically associated domains and genomic compartments with shared chromatin valence. This architecture is constrained by the DNA polymer, which precludes interactions between genes on different chromosomes.

Calcium Signalling in Squid Olfactory Receptor Neurons

open access: yesNeurosignals, 1999
Isolated squid olfactory receptor neurons respond to dopamine and betaine with hyperpolarizing conductances. We used Ca(2+) imaging techniques to determine if changes in intracellular Ca(2+) were involved in transducing the hyperpolarizing odor responses. We found that dopamine activated release of Ca(2+) from intracellular stores while betaine did not

Purinergic receptor antagonists inhibit odorant-mediated CREB phosphorylation in sustentacular cells of mouse olfactory epithelium

open access: yesBMC Neuroscience, 2011
Background Extracellular nucleotides have long been known to play neuromodulatory roles and to be involved in intercellular signalling. In the olfactory system, ATP is released by olfactory neurons, and exogenous ATP can evoke an increase in ...

Single-Cell Transcriptomes Reveal Diverse Regulatory Strategies for Olfactory Receptor Expression and Axon Targeting

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2019
The regulatory mechanisms by which neurons coordinate their physiology and connectivity are not well understood. The Drosophila olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) provide an excellent system to investigate this question.

Adaptaquin is selectively toxic to glioma stem cells through disruption of iron and cholesterol metabolism

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Adaptaquin selectively kills glioma stem cells while sparing differentiated brain cells. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses show Adaptaquin disrupts iron and cholesterol homeostasis, with iron chelation amplifying cytotoxicity via cholesterol depletion, mitochondrial dysfunction, and elevated reactive oxygen species.

Functional evidence of multidrug resistance transporters (MDR) in rodent olfactory epithelium. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
P-glycoprotein (Pgp) and multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP1) are membrane transporter proteins which function as efflux pumps at cell membranes and are considered to exert a protective function against the entry of xenobiotics.
