Molecular Mechanisms of Gonadotropin-Induced Oocyte Maturation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
In vitro maturation of oocytes is routinely utilized for the production of embryos for commercial as well as research purposes. The objectives of the research described in this dissertation were: 1) to examine the molecular mechanism involved in ...

Small RNA pathways in mammalian oocytes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Three distinct small RNA pathways operate in mammalian oocytes: RNAi interference (RNAi), the microRNA (miRNA) pathway, and the PIWI‐associated RNA (piRNA) pathway. These pathways use small RNAs to guide sequence‐specific repression and contribute to oocyte biology by targeting genes and mobile elements or appear insignificant since different ...

ATZ‐1 promotes DNA replication efficiency to maintain normal meiotic function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Absence of ATZ‐1 interferes with meiotic DNA replication and cell cycle function via CHK‐1. This causes downstream defects associated with DNA damage and genomic integrity. Taken together, this study suggests that ATZ‐1 influences DNA replication efficiency and cell cycle function to maintain normal meiotic function.

Calcium signaling in oocyte quality and functionality and its application

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
Calcium (Ca2+) is a second messenger for many signal pathways, and changes in intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) are an important signaling mechanism in the oocyte maturation, activation, fertilization, function regulation of granulosa and ...

Oocyte activation and phospholipase C zeta (PLCζ): diagnostic and therapeutic implications for assisted reproductive technology

open access: yesCell Communication and Signaling, 2012
Infertility affects one in seven couples globally and has recently been classified as a disease by the World Health Organisation (WHO). While in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) offers effective treatment for many infertile couples, cases exhibiting severe male

Managing the Oocyte Meiotic Arrest—Lessons from Frogs and Jellyfish

open access: yesCells, 2020
During oocyte development, meiosis arrests in prophase of the first division for a remarkably prolonged period firstly during oocyte growth, and then when awaiting the appropriate hormonal signals for egg release. This prophase arrest is finally unlocked

Fertilization and activation currents in bovine oocytes [PDF]

open access: yesReproduction, 2002
Abstract One of the first events that occurs at fertilization is a transient modification of the electrical properties of the oocyte plasma membrane. The whole-cell voltage clamp technique was used to demonstrate an outward ion current and a hyperpolarization of the plasma membrane after fertilization in bovine oocytes.

At Home Detection of Ovarian Health Biomarker in Menstruation Blood

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A lateral flow assay enables the detection of anti‐Müllerian hormone directly in unprocessed menstrual blood using silica‐gold nanoshells and smartphone‐assisted machine learning analysis. The platform supports decentralized, user‐operated testing in wearable and dipstick formats, highlighting the potential of menstrual blood as a non‐invasive matrix ...

Maternal effects on oocyte quality in farmed Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) oocyte quality is highly variable and one of the major bottlenecks during fry-production for on-growth in commercial Atlantic halibut farming.
