Multi‐omics and low‐input proteomics profiling reveals dynamic regulation driving pluripotency initiation in early mouse embryos

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Mouse pre‐implantation development involves a transition from totipotency to pluripotency. Integrating transcriptomics, epigenetic profiling, low‐input proteomics and functional assays, we show that eight‐cell embryos retain residual totipotency features, whereas cytoskeletal remodeling regulated by the ubiquitin‐proteasome system drives progression ...

Relationships among tissues, biofluids, and otolith selenium concentrations in wild female burbot (Lota lota)

open access: yesIntegrated Environmental Assessment and Management, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract In the Lake Koocanusa‐Kootenai River system (Montana, USA and British Columbia, Canada), selenium (Se) contamination has become an international concern and is suspected to contribute to the observed burbot (Lota lota) population collapse. Due to our limited ability to sample burbot in Lake Koocanusa for monitoring studies, we used a reference

Decreased cold‐sensing function of the transient receptor potential channel TRPM8 from tailed amphibians

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Ovulation Triggers Activation of Drosophila Oocytes

open access: yesDevelopmental Biology, 2001
Drosophila melanogaster mature oocytes in ovaries are arrested at metaphase I of meiosis. Eggs that have reached the uterus have released this arrest. It was not known where in the female reproductive tract egg activation occurs and what triggers it. We investigated when and where the egg is activated in Drosophila in vivo and at what meiotic stage the

A Surface‐engineered Microfluidic Device for Antibody‐Mediated Negative Selection of High‐Quality Sperm for Assisted Reproduction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports a microfluidic device with a functionalized surface utilizing a polyoxazoline coating and covalently immobilized gold nanoparticles and anti‐phosphatidylserine antibody. The device efficiently eliminates pre‐apoptotic and apoptotic spermatozoa and yields sperm with substantially improved quality and low DNA damage, offering a simple ...

Modulation by cAMP of a Slowly Activating Potassium Channel Expressed in \u3cem\u3eXenopus\u3c/em\u3e Oocytes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
When expressed in the Xenopus oocyte, the minK protein induces a slowly activating voltage-dependent potassium current (Isk). We studied the modulation of this current by altering intracellular cAMP levels and found that the amplitude of Isk is ...

Three‐Dimensional Ovary Model to Improve and Study Murine Follicle Growth

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
To develop new methods for fertility preservation in women, novel culture systems for small follicles need to be established. In this work, a poly(ethylene glycol) based scaffold, with appropriate mechanical and bioactive features to support mouse follicle and ovary cell growth is developed, and the formed cell‐follicle interactions are visualized ...

Oocyte activation and phospholipase C zeta (PLCζ): diagnostic and therapeutic implications for assisted reproductive technology

open access: yesCell Communication and Signaling, 2012
Infertility affects one in seven couples globally and has recently been classified as a disease by the World Health Organisation (WHO). While in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) offers effective treatment for many infertile couples, cases exhibiting severe male

M-phase promoting factor (MPF) and mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK) activities of domestic cat oocytes matured in vitro and in vivo [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
This work was undertaken in order to examine M-phase promoting factor (MPF) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) activities during meiotic progression of cat oocytes cultured in two different media for two different incubation times and ...

Signalling mechanisms of mammalian oocyte activation [PDF]

open access: yesHuman Reproduction Update, 2002
Intensive study over the past 10 years has resulted in major advances in our understanding of the signalling mechanisms required for the transformation of the oocyte into an embryo capable of developing into a new individual. This review focuses on the signal transduction events that occur subsequent to the initial sperm-oocyte plasma membrane ...
