Gonads ofCarassius auratus (teleosts) in organ culture: A new technique and the effects of testosterone

The use of a semi-natural medium (Eagle's MEM supplemented with chicken embryo extract) appears to be satisfactory for ovarian and testicular fragment cultures of Carassius auratus. The male germ cells show a normal degeneration which might be attributed to a lack of pituitary hormones: gonadotropic and, possibly, somatotropic hormone.

A new cell culture technique called three-dimensional-rotation culture (3dR-culture) has been developed. Its main characteristics are: (i) cultivation under constant rotation, and (ii) the use of a three-dimensional material that allows the cells to adhere and to grow in a three-dimensional arrangement.
