Ventricular choline transport: a role for organic cation transporter 2 expressed in choroid plexus.

open access: yesThe Journal of biological chemistry, 2001
To determine whether organic cation transporter (OCT) family members might mediate choline transport in choroid plexus (CP), the handling of choline by cloned transporters and by intact CP isolated from the adult rat was investigated. Expression of OCT1 and OCT2 in Xenopus oocytes increased hemicholinium-3-sensitive choline uptake.

Structural basis of sodium ion-dependent carnitine transport by OCTN2

open access: yesNature Communications
Carnitine is essential for the import of long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria, where they are used for energy production. The carnitine transporter OCTN2 (novel organic cation transporter 2, SLC22A5) mediates carnitine uptake across the plasma ...

Humanized Fruit Flies as a Novel Pre-Clinical Test Model for Membrane Drug Transporters

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioscience-Landmark
Background: Membrane transport proteins are critical determinants of systemic and intracellular drug levels, thereby contributing substantially to drug response and/or adverse drug reactions. Therefore, the U.S.

Downregulation of basophil-derived IL-4 and in vivo TH2 IgE responses by serotonin and other organic cation transporter 3 ligands

open access: yes, 2011
International audienceBACKGROUND:Murine basophils can contribute to the T(H)2 polarization of the immune response by providing rapidly large amounts of IL-4, which suggests that pharmacologic downregulation of this cytokine might provide a strategy to ...

A nucleoside-sensitive organic cation transporter in opossum kidney cells

open access: yes, 1999
Renal secretion of organic cations and anions are pleiotropic, active processes in mammals. Some nucleosides such as deoxyadenosine (dAdo), 2-chlorodeoxyadenosine, and azidothymidine are secreted by human and rodent kidneys. Previous work (J. A.

Ontogeny of Hepatic Organic Cation Transporter-1 in Rat and Human [PDF]

open access: yes
The organic cation transporter (OCT)-1 mediates hepatic uptake of cationic endogenous compounds and xenobiotics. To date, limited information exists on how Oct1/OCT1 functionally develops with age in rat and human livers and how this would affect the ...

Effect of Perinatal Low Protein Diet on the Expression of Renal Organic Cation Transporter 2 and Novel Organic Cation Transporter 2 in Adult Rats

open access: yes
Studies have established that there is a greater risk for onset of adult metabolic syndrome disease such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and obesity in subjects born with low birth weight (LBW).
