Ornithine phenylacetate revisited
Metabolic Brain Disease, 2013In patients with liver failure hyperammonemia is associated with the development of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and immune impairment. Treatment of hyperammonemia is an unmet clinical need. Ornithine phenylacetate (OP) is a novel drug that is targeted at reducing ammonia concentration in patients with liver disease and therefore a potential treatment ...

Crystalline ornithine transcarbamylase
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Enzymology, 1967Abstract Ornithine transcarbamylase (carbamoyl phosphate: l -ornithine carbamoyl transferase, EC 2.1.2.2) from arginine grown Streptococcus D10 cells was purified to homogeneity by acid, solvent, heat, and salt fractionation. The enzyme was then crystallized from an ammonium sulfate solution. Some molecular properties of the enzyme are described.

Ornithine aminotransferase activity, tissue ornithine concentrations and polyamine metabolism
International Journal of Biochemistry, 19891. Inactivation of L-ornithine:2-oxoacid aminotransferase (OAT) by 5-fluoromethylornithine (5FMOrn), a specific inactivator of OAT, causes a great elevation of tissue ornithine (Orn) concentrations. 2. Inhibition of L-ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) by 2-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) had no effect on Orn concentrations. 3. The combined administration of

Activities of ornithine aminotransferase and ornithine decarboxylase in chronically uremic rats
Life Sciences, 1981Abstract The activities of two enzymes mediating different pathways of ornithine catabolism were measured in liver and kidney of chronically uremic rats and their pair-fed controls. Two months following partial nephrectomy hepatic ornithine aminotransferase (OAT) activity tended to be lower in uremic rats and was correlated with urea clearance and ...

Ornithine decarboxylase and ornithine decarboxylase‐inhibiting activity in rat thymocytes
Cell Biochemistry and Function, 1992AbstractIsolation of thymocytes from rat thymus resulted in the disappearance of the high activity of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) that characterizes the thymus of young rats, together with the appearance of an antizyme‐like ODC inhibiting activity, which showed a chromatographic profile that resembled that of dexamethasone‐treated rat thymus ...

Separation of Ornithine and Lysine Activities of the Ornithine-Transcarbamylase-Catalyzed Reaction
Enzyme, 2017Several lines of evidence are presented that an entity is present in mitochondria which converts lysine and carbamylphosphate to homocitrulline, distinct from the ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC): lack of inhibition by lysine of OTC with ornithine as substrate at the pH of the mitochondrial matrix, a K(m) for lysine of 6.3 mmol/l in the crude ...

In SituMicroassay of Ornithine Decarboxylase
Analytical Biochemistry, 1996Ornithine decarboxylase catalyses the principal step in the biosynthesis of polyamines (1, 2) and is reported to be a proto-oncogen implicated in the control of both FIG. 1. Modified rubber stopper. cell growth and transformation (3). Its activity is induced by a number of agents such as amino acids, pharmaceuticals, hormones, and growth stimuli (4 ...
