Pinacidil stimulates osteoblast function in osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells

Immunopharmacology and Immunotoxicology, 2013
This study examined the effect of pinacidil, a nonselective adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channel opener, on the function of osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. Pinacidil caused a significant elevation of collagen synthesis, alkaline phosphatase activity, osteocalcin synthesis and mineralization in the cells (p

Osteoblastic cells: Differentiation and trans-differentiation

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 2008
The osteoblast is the bone forming cell and is derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) present among the bone marrow stroma. MSC are capable of multi-lineage differentiation into mesoderm-type cells such as osteoblasts and adipocytes. Understanding the mechanisms underlying osteoblast differentiation from MSC is a central topic in bone biology that ...

Study of osteoblastic cells in a microfluidic environment

Biomaterials, 2006
Bone tissue engineering consists of culturing osteoblastic cells onto synthetic three-dimensional (3D) porous scaffolds. The organization of bone cells into 3D scaffolds is crucial for ex vivo tissue formation. Diffusional rates of nutrients could be greatly improved by perfusing media through the 3D microporous scaffolds.

Estrogen modulation of osteoblastic cell-to-cell communication

Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, 1998
Two osteoblastic cell populations, calvarial and marrow stromal cells, were exposed to estrogen derivatives in vitro. The hormonal effect was monitored by following intracellular Ca+2 levels [Ca+2]i and gap-junction communication. We measured fast changes in intracellular Ca+2 levels in response, of these cells, to the steroid hormones.

Collagenase synthesis by osteoblast-like cells

Calcified Tissue International, 1984
Cultures of osteoblast-like cells from a rat sarcoma and osteoblast-enriched populations of rat calvarial cells synthesize and secrete a true collagenase and collagenase inhibitor. The enzyme, which is produced in a latent form, appears to be similar to the enzyme produced by fibroblasts.

Circulating Osteoblast-Lineage Cells in Humans

New England Journal of Medicine, 2005
Although current evidence suggests that only a minuscule number of osteoblast-lineage cells are present in peripheral blood, we hypothesized that such cells circulate but that their concentration has been vastly underestimated owing to the use of assays that required adherence to plastic.

Osteoblastic metastases in renal cell carcinoma

The British Journal of Radiology, 1981
Renal cell carcinoma (hypernephroma, renal adenocarcinoma) metastasizes to the skeleton in approximately 10% of cases and characteristically produces expansile lytic lesions (Forbes et al., 1977). Although sclerotic changes may be seen following radiotherapy, osteosclerotic metastases in this condition prior to therapy are virtually unknown (Forbes et ...

Effects of risedronate on osteoblastic cell cultures

Archives of Oral Biology, 2016
Bisphosphonates (BPs) have been widely used in the treatment of bone disorders due to their ability to modulate bone turnover. The biological mechanisms through BFs exert their effects on osteoclasts are well established. However, the role of BFs on the osteoblasts is controversial.

The Intrinsic Incompressibility of Osteoblast-like Cells

Tissue Engineering, 1996
This paper presents a new methodology, apparatus design, and the experimental results of ongoing research into the measurement of the mechanical properties of musculoskeletal tissue at the cellular level. A microchamber was constructed that provides a controlled hydrostatic pressure environment for these cells where optical sectioning, via ...

Steroid Sulfatase Activity in Osteoblast Cells

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1997
We have demonstrated steroid sulfatase activity in osteoblast cells and characteristics of the enzyme were also investigated. Cell free homogenate of rat osteoblast cell line, UMR106-01 and human osteoblast cell lines, MG-63, HOS were incubated with [3H] dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-sulfate) or [3H] estrone-sulfate (E1-sulfate).
