Osteonecrosis affects younger patients more often than osteoarthritis and has significantly greater long-term morbidity. Corticosteroids constitute the most common cause of nontraumatic osteonecrosis. The femoral head is the most common site of osteonecrosis. Bisphosphonate use is associated with osteonecrosis of the jaw.
