The 2025 Kamchatka Earthquake and Tsunami: Cascading Impacts and Risks to Japan

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, Volume 55, Issue 11, Page 2837-2854, September 2026.
ABSTRACT On July 29th, 2025, a large earthquake (Mw 8.8) occurred near the Kamchatka Peninsula. This event caused a tsunami that reached Japan's Pacific coast, even though the source was far away. In this study, we analyze the characteristics of earthquakes and tsunamis and discuss how they relate to the recurrence possibility and risk in Japan.

Effects of Different Drying Methods on the Meat Quality and Characteristic Flavor Compounds of Pacific White Shrimp

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 5, September 2026.
Different drying strategies regulated meat quality and characteristic flavor formation in Litopenaeus vannamei through distinct thermal and dehydration effects. HAFD enhanced non‐volatile umami compounds by promoting free amino acids, GMP, and EUC accumulation, whereas HAD and AFD intensified roasted‐aroma formation through pyrazines, aldehydes, esters,

Depth and season‐related variability in fatty acid composition and lipid nutritional quality indices of farmed Mytilus galloprovincialis

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Volume 106, Issue 12, Page 7358-7367, September 2026.
Abstract BACKGROUND Lipid quality is one of the most important indicators of the nutritional value of farmed mussels. In open‐coastal environments, factors such as cultivation depth and seasonal changes affect lipid dynamics, but their combined effects on lipid quality remain unclear.

Model predicts coastal paralytic shellfish toxicity in mussels from in situ phytoplankton concentrations

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 71, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Harmful algal blooms (HABs) of Alexandrium catenella occur annually in the Gulf of Maine, leading to accumulation of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) in bivalve mollusks and closure of harvesting areas. State monitoring programs in the region rely on weekly shellfish sampling and toxin analysis, requiring extensive effort with limited ...

Curating landscapes to encourage care for biodiversity through arts and citizen science

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 9, Page 3110-3121, September 2026.
Abstract This study investigates how combining Citizen Science and Art workshops within curated wildflower meadows can generate repeated, positive experiences with nature, and foster a sense of care for it. The project aimed to increase awareness, encourage responsibility, and develop competencies related to urban nature.

Technical and economic feasibility of integrating seahorse culture in shrimp/oyster farms

open access: yes, 2017
Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture systems (IMTA) are building ecosystems designed to produce aquatic organisms with less environmental impact. We have developed a simple system and a management strategy for introducing seahorse (Hippocampus spp ...

One History, Many Futures: Exploring Climate‐Driven Changes in Estuarine Water Temperature and Salinity (Sado Estuary Case Study)

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Although the future is uncertain, global projections point to a destabilization of estuarine ecosystems as a response to climate change, with important implications for coastal habitats and communities. However, the vulnerability of these systems to climate change varies regionally.
